Hwasa Declares “I Love My Body” in New Digital Single
Move over, Hwasa is back with the feminist anthem of the season! It’s no secret that since her debut with MAMAMOO, Hwasa has received a lot of hate and criticism both for her looks and her body shape since she does not fit the extremely rigid beauty standards of K-Pop. She’s been under fire recently as well for what was labeled as an inappropriate action on stage. Despite all of this, she has always been outspoken and unapologetic in who she is, which only continues to be reflected in her latest digital single and first release under her new agency PNation.
The track title “I Love My Body” really does say it all. While on the surface it is about embracing her own skin, there is a stronger undertone in the importance of self confidence despite outside influences. It’s a powerful track for Hwasa to release considering she’s regularly at the forefront of hatred directed toward female idols for not meeting beauty standards. The track is a fun, upbeat pop track with some light retro influences in the melody. Coupled with Hwasa’s gorgeous voice and unabashed self-confidence, it’s an incredibly charming single that fits her vibe perfectly.
The retro influences are strong in the creative direction of the music video. It opens up with Hwasa admiring herself in the mirror, not heavily clothed as to allude she just came out of the shower. Most of her outfits are more revealing than much of the Korean media would be okay with, but it definitely showcases the theme of the song. She’s not afraid to show off the curves she gets most criticized for, and it’s a beautiful message.
Not only is it a super fun and catchy song, it’s a very important message, especially among an industry that is so harsh on women. Young girls need this kind of message amidst an internet ridden with awful body standards, and there’s no one better than Hwasa to deliver such a strong important message to the youth. Keep shining and killing the game, queen!
