A Long Journey to Debut Pays Off in Geenius’ Voyage
Marking the first girl group debut of 2024, Geenius entered the K-Pop industry on January 5. The five-member group from House of Music Entertainment (HOMe) made their debut with the single album Voyage. Though this release only contains one track, it’s more than enough to show that the girls are ready to start their new adventure as idols. Yeyoung, Sion, Mika, Zoe, and Andamiro show what makes their debut brilliant in Voyage.
The Members
Like many idols debuting in the 2020s, some Geenius members were known from their survival show appearances. Yeyoung and Sion participated in Mnet’s Girls Planet 999 in 2021, and Zoe, under the name Choi Hayoung, participated JTBC’s MIXNINE in 2017. Yeyoung and Sion appeared as BlockBerry Creative trainees, and Zoe appeared as a Polaris Entertainment trainee.
Shortly after Girls Planet 999, BlockBerry Creative announced Yeyoung and Sion as members of their pre-debut group BEBEZ. Yeyoung and Sion continued posting on BEBEZ’ Instagram account up until June 2023, six months before the reveal of Geenius. The full seven-member lineup of BEBEZ was never shown, but all Geenius members formerly trained at BlockBerry Creative together. According to Korea JoongAng Daily, HOMe stated that Geenius’ debut was six years in the making.
Their Debut: “Voyage”
“Voyage” has a very dreamy feeling. It takes listeners on a “night trip” that the lyrics mention repeatedly. All Geenius members participated in lyric-writing with Boran and Sure Kim, two individuals who also composed “Voyage” with Yeori. The group’s vocals pair very well with the hopeful instrumental.
As for the music video, I love it. It starts with Zoe sketching some drawings that foreshadow later events. These little flashes of art give the video a bit more personality. My favorite usage of the style shift happens when Mika rocks out on a guitar. The animation integrated with the footage is beautiful.
Overall, “Voyage” is a great and optimistic introduction to Geenius. I’m looking forward to any future music the group puts out. If Geenius’ debut indicates the type of talent coming this year, K-Pop is in for an incredible 2024.
