Moon Jongup Goes Retro with “TWIST YA”

After making a return to the music scene with his fellow B.A.P members just a few months ago, Moon Jongup is back with new music and a new genre to explore. One of the things I personally love about Jongup’s music is that he isn’t afraid to explore different genres of music, though I would say he has a propensity for R&B, which he excels at. His latest track “TWIST YA” was pleasantly different than I expected.

For anyone else stuck on Paloma Diamond TikTok (too niche?), this track feels like it came straight out of the ‘80s aesthetic series, like it would be played in a club scene in this ongoing series. It’s very much giving “Take On Me” vibes, a true callback to the retro ‘80s style. The distinctive heavy synth dominates the melody, creating a driving beat. While I’d expect him to kill an ‘80s R&B concept, I’m rather surprised how well he does ‘80s pop too. The higher register of his vocal lines help to contrast the melody. The only gripe is that songs these days are too short, as it barely clocks in at just over two minutes and thirty seconds.

It’s always surprising by the amount of charisma he exudes in performance, especially knowing that he is more soft spoken and shy personality-wise. It’s a showcase of true performance talent to be able to do that. Knowing this about him had me truly clutching my pearls at the dance sequence two-thirds of the way through the track where he is sporting the shortest shorts I’ve ever seen on a male idol. That alone as an outfit is difficult to rock, but to perform in them? Commendable, truly. That aside, the choreography is sharp and strong, as expected, and matches well with the lyrics. I do enjoy the darker aesthetic of the video as well, as it really sets the tone for a mature vibe and gives it more of a club feel.

Jongup doesn’t disappoint with his releases, and continues that streak with “TWIST YA.” Check out the music video below!
