THE MOST ROMANTIC SINGLE OF THIS SPRING FRI(END)S

V, from the group BTS, went off to do his military service on December 11, and had promised some surprises to the ARMYs. On March 3, Bighit Entertainment/HYBE enthusiastically announced the release of his digital single “FRI(END)S” on the 15th of the month.

“FRI(END)S” is a song that expresses the desire to go further in a friendship. On a pop soul R&B rhythm, V takes his audience into his daily life through two different and contradictory situations. The video first reveals a single V with sullen expressions immersed in a crowd of bustling couples kissing passionately. The second part shows V replaying the same scenario, but this time with his beloved. With a big smile on his lips, he has an ecstatic moment despite the chaotic atmosphere that surrounds him.

There is a contrast that perfectly accompanies the lyrics, describing the doubts about his friendship. “Friends are not supposed to get too close,” or even, “But once we cross the line […] Know we'll never be the same.” These lyrics describe his fears. As demonstrated by the end of each sequence, “Now I’m over pretending, so let’s put the ‘end’ in friends” proves that whatever his choice, everything stops suddenly, highlighting the fragile aspect of relationships. Thus, the title FRI(END)S takes on its full meaning, the two words “FREE” and “END” forming “FRIENDS,” perfectly explaining the heart of the song. To start a new relationship, you must free yourself from the old one. The clip ends with V waking up again, this time with the V who seems to be the one from the beginning. His smile, as touching as it is enigmatic, concludes the last image against a silent background, leaving a feeling of comfort after the acceleration of the rhythm felt a few seconds earlier.

We can also highlight V's acting which he was  able to reveal recently during his participation in the IU music video. His facial expressions, his outfit, his hairstyle, everything is carefully thought out. Accompanied by a vocal interpretation full of charm, as sincere as it is moving, this song is an invitation to spring.

To celebrate its release, a fan event by the name of 'FRI(END)S PARTY' was held at a cafe in Seongdong-gu, Seoul on March 16.
