ITZY Got Their Algorhythm In Japanese Release

No, that’s not a typo! ITZY have returned with another Japanese release titled Algorhythm with the title track of the same name. The spelling is a cute play-on word with algorithm and rhythm, suiting the style of this comeback.

“Algorhythm” is an upbeat funky style track that almost reminds you of earlier TWICE releases. It’s a lot lighter hearted than their previous comeback with BORN TO BE, but it still fits the fun side the girls are good at showcasing. The instrumental radiates video game sounds especially in the first half and it goes well into the music video, particularly when the girls are portrayed as robots. The biggest change in the instrumental was during the dance break where the tempo was highly picked up before returning to the original speed of the song for the last chorus. The vocals are also well in their vocal ranges, rather than constantly reaching for a high note. This release really suits the ITZY concept well though.

What was really interesting about the robot part of the music video was how the girls are shown with headsets on and dancing on a small TV screen doing their jobs as idols before they’re shown leaving the set and dancing freely in an airport terminal. It puts in perspective how the idol life can treat artists almost like robots but once they leave a show or performance, they’re free to be themselves without as many worries. Their style also prominently changes once they step into the terminal in one scene, wearing more casual clothing rather than stage outfits. The lyrics “I’ll go with my rhythm, say no to algorithm,’ show the girls will go on to do things how they want to rather than what people say they should do.

Algorhythm is a mini-album with the title track of the same name, as well as “No Biggie” plus instrumental versions of both tracks.
