Exclusive Interview: Chatting with Aubrey Miller
As children, we all aspire to do something great. Some want to be doctors, others lawyers, and some want to become performers. Aubrey Miller, a singer, songwriter, actress, and dancer from the United States who just recently released her debut single “Crossing My Heart,” was able to make her childhood dreams into a career. When Aubrey isn’t acting on Amazon’s show Just Add Magic or writing her next hit song, she likes to make K-Pop dance covers. The Kraze had the opportunity to chat with her to learn more about her new music and how she found her way into the K-Pop community.
Q: For our readers who are getting to know you for the first time, can you please give a short introduction?
A: Hi! My name is Aubrey Miller. I'm an American actress, singer, and dancer. I just released my new original song "Crossing My Heart," and you may know me for my acting work on Amazon's Just Add Magic, Disney's Austin and Ally, and Nickelodeon's Sam & Cat.
Q: First, let’s talk about your single “Crossing My Heart.” What was your inspiration for this track?
A: My inspiration for my song "Crossing My Heart" came from a current relatable situation of having a crush on a guy who you keep crossing paths with but never quite get to meet.
Q: In your single, you include the line “숨을 쉬다 means take my breath away.” What was the reason behind the inclusion of Korean lyrics in your single?
A: I have grown to love Korean entertainment and their culture. When I started getting more familiar with it, I wanted to be able to understand the meaning behind the music and shows. I wanted to also be able to communicate with my many fans from the country. In K-Pop, you often find them singing a line in English, so I thought it would be fun for me to sing a line in Korean in my single.
Q: The music video for “Crossing My Heart” is filled with eye-catching dance moves (choreographed by Kevin and Dea Nguyen). What was it like to work with such accomplished choreographers?
A: I knew I wanted an incredible team surrounding the making of my music video, so I reached out to the incredible Kevin Nguyen, who was a dancer in Taehyung's solo routine “Singularity,” and his brilliant wife Dea Nguyen. It was an honor being able to work with choreographers of their caliber. Having them create my choreography and having their mentorship during the process meant the world to me.
Q: How did you discover K-Pop? Who are your favorite artists right now?
A: One of my friends asked me if I had ever heard of K-Pop and I told her I hadn't. She recommended me to watch BTS's "Blood Sweat and Tears" music video, and since then, I've fallen in love with K-Pop. I have huge respect for K-Pop artists, their music, and incredible dancing. My ultimate favorite group is BTS, but I also enjoy listening to NCT, BLACKPINK, Red Velvet, TWICE, IU, EXO, GOT7, etc.
Q: Has your love of K-Pop influenced your musical choices?
A: I love the fact that you can listen to an incredible song with so much meaning and passion behind it, but also be able to put a hard-hitting dance with it. I appreciate that K-Pop is clean and respectful but also just genuinely good music. I've been inspired to incorporate that aspect into my music career.
Q: You have several K-Pop cover dances on your YouTube channel—what has been your favorite cover to film? What cover would you like to film in the future?
A: One of my favorite K-Pop dances to film was my cover of BTS's "Airplane Pt. 2." The dance is known for having an old fashioned microphone on a stand, but since I didn't have one of those, I had to improvise and use a mop. I had a blast filming that dance.
Q: Now that you have made your musical debut, who are some artists you would like to work with in the future?
A: I would ultimately love to work with BTS in the future, it’s kinda far fetched, but a girl can dream. I would also like to work with Zedd, BLACKPINK, and the new K-Pop girl group ITZY.
Q: Any plans to release more music in the near future?
A: Absolutely! The story behind "Crossing My Heart" takes place over a series of songs/videos, so this is just the first chapter.
Q: What are your future goals for your acting career?
A: I would love to be a lead in a feature film, as well as star in another TV series.
