B-Sides: January 2020 Favorites

It feels like the New Year has just started, but we are already wrapping the first month up with a stack of lovely comebacks. While we brace ourselves for the upcoming month’s comebacks and debuts, here we have a hand-picked playlist of B-sides from the January releases.

“Shh” - SF9

The year kicked off with SF9's first full-length album, Good Guy. With the members trying their hand in producing and composing the album’s songs, the fruits of their labor paid off, bringing home two music show wins for the group, including their first ever in their career. The song “Shh” is an upbeat song with a slight retro and jazz influence. The song is a bold confession to the lover with no regrets, laced with affectionate terms. With a peppy tune and flattering lyrics, the members sound sassy and sweet. The full English chorus makes people sing along instantly. It’s no wonder why the track stays as a listener’s favorite in the album playlist.

“Precious” – ATEEZ

Another highlight of January would definitely be the return of ATEEZ with their mini-album, TREASURE EPILOGUE : Action To Answer. The track “Precious” is not a new track to ATINYs, as they got a glimpse of the song from the act’s previous album. The song lifts the playlist by bringing in segments of the group’s prior released side tracks, “Treasure” and “Utopia,” adding an ode to the entire journey of the group. The lyrics sing about being caught in another world, which seems like a dream but it is not. And according to ATEEZ, ATINY are their precious treasure that has been through the voyage with them, and they are looking forward to making more memories with them in the future.

“Not Sorry” - ENOi

The seven-member group ENOi seems to have been living under a rock with less limelight than many other groups. In that time, they’ve been preparing themselves for the right time to come. “Not Sorry,” from the group’s first mini-album, RED IN THE APPLE, brings out a retro feel and is quite entertaining to the listeners. The song equally balances the positions of both vocalists and rappers, giving them space to showcase their talents. As for the music, the instrumentals are light to emphasize the members’ verses. Though the track does not instantly grab the listener's attention, it paves the way for the rookie producers to set a place for themselves in the coming years.

“Lighthouse” - B.O.Y

Former members of MYTEEN, Kim Kookheon and Song Yuvin’s debut as a duo has been one of the most anticipated of 2020. As expected, the duo made their debut this January in the name of B.O.Y. Complementing the vocalists’ honey voices, the debut mini-album, Phase One: YOU, showcases their talent as singers with mellow and sweet ballads, making the listeners feel dreamy. The R&B track “Lighthouse” is such a cure to the heart, as the lines sing about the promise of protecting and being a lighthouse during the darkest times.
