B-Sides: Daebak Debut (TVXQ Changmin’s Solo)

Craving some chocolate? TVXQ’s Changmin has got you covered.

With a number of releases and debuts, April has been a great month. While rookie groups such as CRAVITY, TOO, and H&D aimed high in establishing themselves, the prominent idols Suho and Changmin stepped forward to venture their paths as solo artists.

Serving as an artist for almost 17 years now, TVXQ’s Changmin was very well aware of the pulse of his audience while presenting his debut album, Chocolate. The EP showcases a new version of the artist, pleasing his long-term fans as well as attracting new listeners. Along with the title track “Chocolate,” the album comes with five more unique B-sides, which make for a perfect playlist to tune in to this week.

“High Heels”

Accurate to the title of the song, the track begins with a pair of pointy heels click-clacking to reveal a chill beat. With shakers and soft western instrumentals, the song is reminiscent of the 90s pop beat. The lyrics sing about feeling attracted towards a flashy woman and trying to gain the necessary confidence before approaching her. With the artist’s husky verses and crisp English taglines, the song sounds alluring and fun. Though the lyrics and beat seem simple, the singer crowns the track as an elegant one with his superior vocals.

“Lie”

“Lie,” a product of Changmin and Chungha’s collaboration, is indeed one of the most beautiful tracks in the album. The melancholic album sings about the bittersweet relationship between an unstable couple. Despite feeling hurt and lonely, we always tend to give one more chance for the person we love, and this is the message conveyed in the lyrics as they sing, “Silent lines, the same every night. Uh, but just one more, one more.” The duo sounds insanely perfect in expressing the tension of the couple and gets the listeners empathizing along with the narrator. The soothing melody and the singers’ gentle vocals credit the song to be a suitable OST for a romance drama.

"Piano”

The sensual mood of the album is set all over again with the peppy instrumental introduction of “Piano.” The song compares a love life with playing a piano and how efficiently the lover plays with him as if playing a piano. “I like it when you say don’t stop, like it when you say don’t stop,” sings the artist revealing his sensual appeal all through the song. The unique metaphorical comparison and the soaring verses sung by Changmin is bound to have listeners swaying and maybe even blushing.

“Me, Myself & I”

The mood once again shifts from the alluring to pleasant with “Me, Myself & I,” a song about the positive aftermath of a breakup. The song begins with an unanswered call buzz and follows to be an aesthetically pleasing song along with the singer’s charming voice and comforting lyrics. “No more sad nights,” sings the lyrics, expressing the better version of oneself after reviving from an unhealthy relationship. The melody wrapped with soothing vocals of the artist makes sure to keep the listeners cheerful and confident.

“No Tomorrow”

“No Tomorrow” serves as the outro of the album, as the song beautifully sings about cherishing all the happy little things to experience in life. The song also sings about carrying the scars of the past yet living life to the fullest as if there is no tomorrow. The lyrics are worth a listen as we get to have a friend accompanying us, letting us know that everything is going to be okay. For fans who have traveled a long way with the artist, the song becomes a souvenir to reflect on their long path together, and for new listeners, it is a promise for a long run.

Dealing with attraction, breakups, doubts, and comfort, the album is indeed a package of various feelings and emotions. With the artist finally showcasing his new aura to the world, let us make sure to support him through the run.
