ONEWE and Hwasa Navigate Love in “Q”

On April 2, ONEWE released their newest single “Q,” an R&B-rock fusion track that features labelmate Hwasa of MAMAMOO. The track comes off their single album 3/4 which also features an instrumental version of the song.

With a classic call-and-response in the vocals between Cya, Yonghoon, Dongmyeong, and Hwasa, “Q” is about the imbalances that occur when one-half of a relationship seems to be putting in more effort than the other. Though at its core a pop-rock track, the song features musical elements of everything from R&B in its relaxed vocals to jazz in its percussion. Opening with a soft electric guitar, the song almost has a lazy, beachy vibe to it—ideal for a song about a partner with lackluster commitment. Hwasa’s easy vocals offer the perfect complement to the vibe already set by the members of ONEWE.

“Q” is a bit more relaxed than a lot of ONEWE’s previous work and certainly different, though it suits the band well. Despite the somewhat unfamiliar musical territory, both Cya and Yonghoon took part in the composition, so the song is still very much ONEWE. Whether this is the band looking to define their sound or simply just experimenting with different genres, it’s a solid step in a great direction.
