WJSN Takes our Breath Away with “Unnatural”

Ujungs, are you ready? After nine months, WJSN returns with a classy and mature concept for their ninth mini-album Unnatural and title track of the same name. Instead of showcasing their whimsical and magical appeal, WJSN opts for a more sophisticated and chic image.

THE TITLE

“Unnatural” is an electro-pop song that describes girls who feel awkward or weird around their crush. Leader EXY participated in writing lyrics for this title track. Based on the translated lyrics, WJSN expresses the awkwardness by saying, “I’m pretending nothing’s wrong,” and “Sometimes I keep it cool but it doesn’t work out.” Member Dawon stated at WJSN’s showcase that this song is perfect for those who just got into a relationship or a “sseom,” which means a relationship where two people are dating but aren’t official. Throughout the song, the girls repeat phrases like, “What should I do?” and “How can I breathe,” expressing their inner thoughts and trying to just act normal around their crush. One part of the song that’s sure to capture your attention is the high notes in the chorus, leaving you with a burst of energy you’ve never heard before. The song’s power and charm are sure to capture the attention of female fans who need a song to best express their feelings.

Their music video did not miss when it came to how visually appealing the members looked. The girls take us around various rooms with statues, cameras, and mirrors where they ponder on their “unnatural” feeling. Even though there isn’t a particular storyline for this video, their charismatic aura shows off their maturity with elegance each moment they appear on-screen. With precise and chic choreography, WJSN showcases their talent with such simplicity that leaves fans amazed.

THE ALBUM

The next song on the album, “Last Dance” gives an almost hypnotizing introduction that’s sure to reel you in. Unlike “Unnatural,” the lyrics for this track describe the end of love; even though this is the last time, WJSN does not want you to forget this moment. In EXY’s rap verse, she describes the final emotions with this love ending, but knows this needs to happen. The line, “I'll tell you the only thing for sure, I gave you everything without regrets,” really builds the narrative of the love ending from what they discovered. Even though the love ends here, WJSN still wants to give a proper goodbye.

In “Super Moon,” the track feels bubbly and pop-inspired for days when you need a pick-me-up. This is another track where EXY offers her input into the lyrics for the Unnatural album. Based on the lyrics, the girls are the [super] moon, up in the sky to give their fans everything they wish for and desire. The line “I’ll light up the dark darkness brightly” offers hope knowing that WJSN are the shining light to peek through the dark for fans. This track would be the best fitting for a night under the stars and moon with friends.

Upon first impression, “New Me” is a soft and retro-sounding track written by members EXY and Seola. With the line, “Nobody can control me, nobody can change me,” this song will uplift fans and bring confidence like never before. As the song approaches the end, the transition from the pre-chorus to the second chorus will bless fans' ears as they look forward to the soft outro.

“Yalla” is the house and electro-pop track that fits best in a nightclub setting. There’s something about the electronic beat that makes you want to dance and forget about the world for a second. This is the fourth song on the album that EXY participated in writing the lyrics. In the song, “fakeness” and “baby nobody knows” are repeated often, creating the meaning of hiding something. Even though there’s room for interpretation of the lyrics, WJSN has given fans a variety of styles to listen to in this album.

The album ends with “Rewind,” a soft piano ballad written by EXY. This is the track where WJSN showcases their heartwarming vocals, leaving a beautiful end to this album. Hearing each members’ melodic vocals will make you teary-eyed and stunned by their raw talent. The title “Rewind” alludes to going back to revisit memories or a time that brought happiness. Even though the end of this album was bittersweet, WJSN has proven they are one-of-a-kind.

With the Unnatural album, WJSN showcases their wide musicality spectrum that is sure to win anyone over. If one thing is certain, WJSN will do whatever it takes to dominate the world with their memorable vocals and jaw-dropping visuals.
