Throwback Thursday: Videos That Make You Go WTF?

Any fan knows that K-Pop is a visual experience, but some music videos can leave you wondering what the heck you just watched.

“RED” - HyunA

HyunA’s 2014 track “RED” served as the single from her third mini-album A Talk, and while the song is full of that characteristic HyunA attitude, the music video is certainly eyebrow-raising. Between half-naked men donning animal heads and a recurring monkey theme, the video for “RED” is anything but normal.

“CRAYON” - G-DRAGON

BIGBANG is known for their out-of-the-box concepts, so it’s no surprise that the same holds true for G-DRAGON. His 2012 song “CRAYON,” short for “crazy on,” could not be more aptly named. Maybe it’s the way he prances around ballerinas while sporting a duck-shaped innertube, or maybe it’s his neon pink velvet Wonder Woman robe, but GD and the video for “CRAYON” have a lot to offer viewers.

“Chococo” - gugudan

The music video for gugudan’s 2017 song “Chococo” seems innocent enough at first, but things quickly turn quirky. The video starts off with the girls working in a chocolate factory, but as the story progresses, darker motifs begin showing up, including a giant cursed doll. By the end of the video, the girls even become the candy about which they sing, leaving an almost macabre taste in the viewer’s mouth.

“Banana allergy monkey” - Oh My Girl Banhana

In 2018, Oh My Girl debuted their sub-unit Oh My Girl Banhana—consisting of members Hyojung, Binnie, and Arin—and their song “Banana allergy monkey” is about as tongue-in-cheek as it gets. While the track itself is beyond cute, the monkey-themed concept left fans with many, many questions.

“Nap of a star” - Tomorrow x Together

Tomorrow x Together’s 2019 B-side “Nap of a star” is a beautiful song with a music video that contains an equally beautiful story. Between the use of stop-motion animation and TXT’s characteristic concept of friendship, the music video for the song is undeniably gorgeous, but that’s not to say it isn’t creepy. Fairy tales have always had dark undertones, just like those in the video, and those unfamiliar with TXT’s lore might be a little taken aback at first watch.
