[Exclusive Interview]: DEVYN Opens Up About “WHO,” Artist Life, and More!
The lovely singer and songwriter DEVYN makes her return with her third single “WHO” - a personal track that creates a message to herself and listeners on accepting growth, change, and embracing who you are. The Kraze had an amazing opportunity to chat with DEVYN about her new single, what she’s learned as a singer, and much more! Read what she had to say below.
Q: Congratulations on your new single! Can you please tell me more about the song "WHO" and where the inspiration for the song came from?
A: Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time! I’m super excited about this release. “WHO” is a very intimate song describing the growth and acceptance of who I am. It’s sort of a conversation I’m having with myself. I pulled a lot of inspiration from the memories I had as a kid, experiences I’ve lived through, along with my dreams and aspirations.
Q: What is one lyric in your song "WHO" that resonates the most with you and why?
A: That’s hard because a lot of the lyrics resonate with me! But if I had to pick just one, I think the lyric that most resonates with me is, “My reflection, is what it is, is who I get,” because the girl I’m looking at is it. One life, one body, and I want to take care of her. I thought of the song “Reflection” from Mulan while writing this lyric, haha. I remember singing it to my grandparents in Korea all the time.
Q: What's the main message to take away from your song?
A: The main message is to accept who you are…along with your past, present, and future self while appreciating the journey.
Q: Do you believe your song will open up a bigger conversation on accepting growth and change?
A: I hope so! I really hope it can inspire people to accept and love all parts of them. I feel like when I truly embraced and understood who I was, I felt at peace about everything else after.
Q: What do you enjoy the most about being a singer/songwriter?
A: The people you meet, the energy, and most importantly, creating. I love getting lost in a song and sharing the moment with others.
Q: If you could perform at any place in the world (when COVID restrictions lift), where would it be and why?
A: Seoul, Korea and Seattle, WA. I have so much family in Korea, especially in Seoul. It would be amazing to perform in front of my grandparents again, but this time have it be the real thing, haha. And Seattle because I grew up there the majority of my life. It would be nice to go back and perform there.
Q: What's the best advice you've been given as a singer in the industry?
A: Confidence breeds success…as soon as you own who you are, nothing can stop you.
Q: What is one message you would like to tell your fans?
A: THANK YOU!! I seriously get emotional thinking of the support I have received, so thank you for sticking with me on this journey!
Q: Do you have a hidden talent? If so, what is it?
A: Haha, I guess my hidden talent is cooking. I have an amazing kimchi jjigae recipe!
Q: Do you consider yourself to be an introvert or extrovert?
A: I'm definitely both an extrovert and introvert, haha. It depends on the setting and the energy around me!
Q: What's your go-to song to pump you up?
A: My pump up song was “Kick It” by NCT 127 for a while, hahaha! When I’m at a shoot, my go-to song is “Lit” by Lay because it brings out my alter ego, hehe.
Q: If you could own any particular item in the world, what would it be?
A: A teleportation machine, HA!
