Red Velvet Welcomes You To Their Queendom

More than a year after their immensely successful track “Psycho,” Red Velvet is back with a new mini-album and song appropriately titled “Queendom.” The new mini-album contains six brand new tracks and is a celebration of everything fans have grown to love about Red Velvet, who recently celebrated their seventh year anniversary. Let’s take a look at what the queens had to offer on the new album.

“Queendom”

Composed, written, and arranged by a powerful team of female songwriters and producers, “Queendom” is a dynamic anthem of self-love and female empowerment. Cazzie Opeia, minGtion, Anne Judith Vik, Ellen Berg, and Jo Yoonkyung worked with Red Velvet on the new dance-pop track with refreshing riffs ready for summer, and the group’s signature powerful vocals once again shine on the new track. Red Velvet attaches an extremely catchy post-chorus that is bound to get stuck in your head for a long time, making the song extremely memorable. 

The bright music video is a whimsical trip through a magical factory where Red Velvet makes your dreams come true. Portraying different characters, the Red Velvet members walk through the colorful hallways of this factory donning gorgeous outfits, and the video is interspersed with the song’s choreography. Several scenes in the music video also allude to SMCU and the fictional world of “Kwangya,” the growing universe created by SM Entertainment.  

B-Sides

The album’s B-sides are an eclectic collection of songs ranging from funk-pop to slow R&B jams. Opening with “Pose,” Red Velvet declares that they don’t want to pay attention to the negativity and simply do what they like. An uptempo dance track, “Pose” is reminiscent of the group’s 2019 summer track “Umpah Umpah,” but the interesting switch ups in the post-chorus make it unique and refreshing. The third track on the album is the electro-funk song “Knock On Wood,” a reference to the famous saying. The lyrics to the song express that the members wish for luck as they start a new relationship. 

Quite possibly the most beautiful B-side on Queendom, “Better Be” is an R&B-pop song featuring rhythmic drumming and a subtle precursive beat. The members' dreamy vocals and rich harmony add excitement to the fast-paced production. The song is a signature Red Velvet tune containing everything fans love about Red Velvet tracks. The final songs on the album are “Pushin’ N Pullin’” and “Hello, Sunset.” Both tracks are slow tempo R&B melodies, putting focus on the members' beautiful and soothing vocal delivery. Lyrics to the songs are about trust and faith in each other.

Irene, Yeri, Seulgi, Joy, and Wendy once again show why they are considered to be one of the most popular pop acts in music with the release of Queendom. After the unfortunate incident following the release of “Psycho” in 2019, Red Velvet makes a powerful comeback in every sense of the word with “Queendom.” The new song and its parent album are yet another crown jewel in the group’s tiara.
