Favorite Song: “Splash” - MIRAE
This one is kind of a surprise, given that I did not pay close attention to MIRAE’s debut. In my comeback coverage of their return, I dive deeper into the difference between both songs, but something about “Splash” really cut into the core of what I enjoy in K-Pop. Heavier hip-hop influences suit this group very well, and the mixing of the melody and vocals is very pleasant. It’s quite an achievement for a rookie group to stick out to me more than some of the bigger name comebacks this month. Keep an eye on these boys, they’ve got something special.
Favorite Album: SOMO:FUME - JAY B
Once the tracklist for this was released, everyone knew JAY B’s first album with H1GHR Music was going to be every K-R&B enthusiasts’ dream. In many of his releases under moniker Defsoul, JAY B often explored the more R&B-influenced music he wasn’t granted in GOT7, so it was guaranteed that his debut solo album was going to be absolute quality in this department. Add on top of that collaborations with huge producers GroovyRoom and Cha Cha Malone, and features from the likes of Jay Park and Wheein of MAMAMOO, and you’ve got audio gold. This was obvious without even listening, but the first listen-through was even better than anticipated. There’s a little bit of everything in this album, from lofi beats with a vocal focus to a more upbeat summery feel and classic R&B influences. If you’re into K-R&B at all, this album can’t be missed on your rotation.
Favorite Music Video: “You can’t sit with us” - Sunmi
Never in my life did I think I would need a zombie-fighting Sunmi until I got it. It’s been awhile since we’ve gotten a good zombie apocalypse concept, and it fits Sunmi’s character surprisingly well. The retro-style music video full of bright pinks is aesthetically pleasing, especially if you remember the days of owning a clunky dial-up computer and Motorola Razr phone. The cutaway to the fight scene is actually way more intense and well done than you’d anticipate for a music video, but that’s really what makes it so fun. Where would K-Pop be without Sunmi’s music video productions?
Runner up: “Summer or Summer” - Hyolyn & Dasom
Maybe it is because I'm finally getting my summer beach vacation when this post goes live, but something about “Summer or Summer” hit so hard this month. If you remember the days of SISTAR summer domination, the duo of Hyolyn and Dasom brings back some nostalgic feelings. Even if it’s only two of the four members, the single is a great callback to SISTAR’s strong point. Who wouldn’t want to go on a beach trip after watching this music video?
Favorite Music Show Performance: “Thunderous” - Stray Kids
This is definitely the comeback everyone has been talking about. What really caught my attention from the latest comeback from Stray Kids is the intricate set design that goes along with the “Thunderous” concept. There’s a hint of traditional Korean culture mixed with the overwhelming presence of thunder and lightning, which is just so cool I can’t quite get over it. What’s even cooler in this particular stage is the transition from the painting of the background to the 3D build, lit up with all different neon lights. Of course you can’t ignore the boys’ choreography and stage presence on top of that.
