Throwback Thursday: 8 More Halloween Throwbacks

We made it to the end of the month! October is coming to a close, and Halloween is just a few days away. Earlier this month, we released a starter pack with iconic Halloween-themed throwbacks to get you in the scary spirit. Let’s wrap things up with a couple more tracks - including some personal favorites!

“VOODOO DOLL” - VIXX

Starting strong with the concept kings themselves, VIXX’s first full-length album VOODOO with title track “VOODOO DOLL” marked the beginning of a new era for the group. This track and accompanying album would go down in history for its shockingly grisly visuals, powerful sound, and intense attention to conceptual details that had already been growing as a marker for VIXX’s comebacks, but would then become their trademark. Despite being released in November of 2013, this song and music video hold nothing back, following through with its horrific setting to create an atmosphere perfect for Halloween.

“GOOD NIGHT” - Dreamcatcher

Dreamcatcher is yet another group skilled in executing concepts that could not possibly be left off of this Halloween round-up. With so many great comebacks to choose from, “GOOD NIGHT” is just the right amount of spooky for this list. In this continuation to their powerful debut track “Chase Me,” “GOOD NIGHT” is full of mysterious and haunting imagery. The song is a perfect balance of soft and hard, with fast-paced, heavy guitar instrumentation guiding the sound up until the beautiful high note and light pianos in the bridge. The girls even did a Halloween performance of “GOOD NIGHT,” where dedicated Insomnias filled in when the music abruptly cut out.

“삐리빠빠” - Narsha

Last time, we covered GAIN’s unforgettable “Paradise Lost;” it’s only right to follow up with fellow Brown Eyed Girls member Narsha’s 2010 track “삐리빠빠.” This true electronic song is hypnotic with its simple hook and repetitions of, “bbi ri bba bba.” The video has a multitude of intriguing, avant-garde sets and gothic stylings that are both uncanny and, for lack of a better word, camp. This is a true, Halloween-appropriate selection for sure.

“WITCH” - BOYFRIEND

BOYFRIEND, now known as BF, engaged in many creative and theatrical concepts throughout their promotions, with “WITCH” representing their take on some darker themes. Acting as vampires, the members negotiate their relationship with the female antagonist, “Red Riding Hood,” putting on an interesting performance with some fun battle choreography in the video's final act. The hook, “Your body goes boom bara boom,” is addictive enough, with a sound reminiscent of older K-Pop or pop in general.

“Zombie” - PURPLE K!SS

This is probably the cutest Halloween song on this list. “Zombie” isn’t much of a throwback, only just recently hitting one year since its release, but it's too good to leave out of this round-up. PURPLE K!SS has an incredible discography so far; even their debut “Ponzona” would’ve been fitting here. “Zombie” is a fun and seasonally-relevant track to go back to. The styling and visuals are a perfect contrast to the vicious zombie hoards running about in the video, pairing up greatly with the immaculate vocals of the girls. Don’t forget to check out the Halloween performance version of “Zombie” as well!

“Thriller” - BTOB

BTOB’s horror comeback “Thriller” is an absolute novelty among their diverse musical career, but it was an iconic release nonetheless! Melodys were treated to both the stunning vocals typical to BTOB and equally exciting visuals as the members donned black leather numbers in a graveyard.

“Addicted” - PIXY

PIXY is another more recent feature on this list, but their intense and haunting track “Addicted” just can’t be left out. This is one many might have missed out on due to their newness being compounded by the numerous contrasting concepts emerging in K-Pop each day. So, if you haven’t heard it yet, now is a perfect time! If not for the song itself, the video, styling, performance, and sheer potential of the group will capture you.

“Midnight Circus” - Sunny Hill

Sunny Hill’s jazzy and abstract 2011 track “Midnight Circus” is bouncy, fun, and incredibly disarming with its upbeat sound and subtle commentary on the K-Pop industry. This track is definitely charming, possessing that special 2010s flair unique to music from this era. The use of the circus setting is scary enough on its own without the shots of the members trapped in various bonds and cages emphasizing the lyrics about being trapped with no chance of escape.
