NMIXX Makes Robust Debut

Incoming artist alert! The latest JYP Entertainment girl group has made their official debut. On February 22, 2022 at 6 p.m. KST, the visually stunning septet NMIXX released their debut single album AD MARE featuring their debut single “O.O.” Leaving many in shock and speechless from their new genre style “MIXX Pop,” there’s no questioning that their eccentric sound has carved a new legacy and sound for the future of K-Pop.

The early stages of teasing the upcoming debut of NMIXX began in July 2021—accounts were made on social media platforms under the name JYPn. During July, there were multiple teasers that would bring “Your Next Favorite Girl Group” by 2022. In mid-July, a limited edition “Blind Package” sold in a 10-day period for anyone that wished to pre-order the surprise contents of an upcoming JYP girl group. Reaching over 60,000 pre-orders, JYP then revealed the lineup. Between the months of August and November, cover videos were released on the JYPn YouTube channel to showcase the possible lineup.

The official lineup features Lily, Haewon, Sullyoon, Jinni, Bae, Jiwoo, and Kyujin—the multi-talented girls who would go on to become NMIXX. Their name is made up of the letter "N," which means now, new, close, and the unknown n. The word "MIX" symbolizes combination and diversity, meaning "the best combination for a new era.” With an impressive legacy being formed before our very eyes, these girls are certainly bringing high expectations. Prior to their debut in NMIXX, Sullyoon was previously a trainee at Woollim Entertainment and Lily was a former K-Pop Star 4 contestant.

AD MARE contains a total of two singles, “O.O” and “TANK,” as well as their instrumental versions. Written and composed by Dr.JO, Dem Jointz, Ryan S. Jhun, Oh Hyunsun, Jeong Joonho, Jessica Oh, Ericka J. Coulter, Deanna DellaCioppa, and Matthew Jarnagin, B-side “TANK” is a catchy anthem that expresses obsessed feelings for someone. The song easily became a favorite to many since its teased release from NMIXX’s debut trailer. It was the most anticipated track on the single album due to its catchy chorus. “O.O” was written and composed by THE HUB team (ENAN, Chanti, Brian U, Kim Juwon (MarkAlong), EJAE, Awry, Ayushy, Jan Baars, and Rajan Muse), Dr.JO, and Charlotte Wilson.

"O.O"

After the song’s official release, fans online have left a number of comments struggling to determine their true and initial impression of “O.O.” With words like “strange,” “confusing,” “overwhelming,” and “weird” being used to coin the track, it’s totally normal to take time to let it grow on you—or not. The artistic and stylistic choice to opt for an extraordinary sound that creates a new genre called “MIXX Pop” is certain to change up K-Pop’s sound. According to Genius Korea, one of the writers and composers Charlotte Wilson responded to a question on the lyrics page, stating: “We wanted to create something fresh and unique. Baile Funk is the first genre heard in the song and it is exciting and vibrant, the second is Rock Pop, which is also vibrant, but in an opposite way. We layered the song to showcase both genres specifically.” Transitioning from genres like electro-pop, vintage pop-rock, and dance will be remembered no matter what you feel about the single, but you cannot deny that this was a strong debut for NMIXX.

For a debut music video like “O.O,” the production value is insane and the cost is undeniably expensive based on the high-definition viewing. Featuring a paid promotion and sponsorship for Coca-Cola, the music video is a visual masterpiece, bouncing from a variety of staging. As the girls journey through town—on rooftops, underground, ascending through mid-air, and in a dessert shop—you start to absorb the group’s fierceness in their performance. The part of the music video that will leave you in awe of their undeniable visual beauty is when they’re above the clouds, standing with poofy gowns on a small bed of flowers and floating in the sky. While the concept styles vary from innocent, fierce, and girl crush, the music video is truly an excellent sight to see.

Starting today and moving forward, NMIXX is here to stay and is predicted to shake up our world with their intensifying concept. The explosive energy they unleash as rookies has an insane amount of potential. As JYP’s sixth girl group, let’s see what 2022 has in store for the bold girls of NMIXX.
