Favorite Song: “VOYAGER” - Kihyun

A pop-rock influenced track has really proven to fit MONSTA X vocalist Kihyun. The release has a very different feel from the others of this month, and something about the rock influence is very nostalgic for me as a child of the early 2000s. The song itself also leaves plenty of room for Kihyun to shine as a vocalist, which we all know is what he does best. The simplicity of the track is what is so appealing about it, as “VOYAGER” does nothing to be particularly flashy, and instead gives us a taste of a genre we don’t see used enough in K-Pop. As our staff writer Rachel put it in her coverage, Kihyun has officially (and finally) entered his rockstar era, and we couldn’t be more excited about it.

Favorite Album: 2 - Bang Yongguk

I’ve already waxed poetic about Bang Yongguk as an artist, so it’s no surprise that the new mini-album release topped everything else this month. Any past bad luck aside, it’s so refreshing to see an older generation idol return to the scene and find success in his solo work, and 2 does a wonderful job of showcasing Yongguk’s talents in producing different genres. While he is primarily a rapper and usually focuses on that genre, 2 shows a more diverse range of work within the album. A 2022 comeback of an artist that debuted in 2012 is a beautiful thing to see, and I’m so proud of Yongguk for paving a new road for himself in the K-Pop industry.

Favorite Music Video: “Love In Space” - Cherry Bullet

It’s been over a year since Cherry Bullet made a comeback, and with this group you’re never sure what you’re going to get just based on past releases. “Love In Space” has a very retro ‘80s vibe to the track, but what really stood out for this comeback to me was the visuals in the music video. There is a dreamy and otherworldly vibe to the song, given the title, but the visuals in the video were beyond stunning. The red leather and black outfits were a personal favorite, but there’s no denying that they rocked the sparkling blue and pink dresses as well. Something about the bright colors and sets of this music video just did the trick this month, maybe because it felt more complex than a traditional cutesy music video, yet didn’t follow the girl crush trend as well.

Honorable Mention: “Ven para” - Weeekly

Indeed, the girls are killing it again this month. Weeekly brought us a brand new concept from the group, shifting away from their usual cutesy concepts to try their hand at the girl crush fad. I very much enjoyed their interpretation of the concept, and found their sets and outfits fantastic. While the video is simple in that it doesn’t contain any kind of storyline, the visuals more than make up for it.

Favorite Performance: “Tomboy” - (G)I-DLE

As much as I’ve called the girl crush concept a fad in this article so far, I do still have some kind of weakness for it. While the song isn’t my favorite (G)I-DLE release, the stage outfits have been on-point and the concept of the song is up my alley. I love this particular performance because we see the girls in all black, with chains, studded belts, and shirts featuring heavy metal bands. The dance is fun as well, and part of it is going viral on TikTok at the moment.
