Weeekly Express Gratitude to Fans with “Good Day (Special Daileee)”

Weeekly signaled an upcoming change when they dropped their fan song “Good Day (Special Daileee)” on September 12, 2023. The single serves as a thank you gift to the fans, as a celebration of the group’s third anniversary, and as the end of the latest chapter in Weeekly’s career. The 18-month gap following their previous single album, Play Game : AWAKE, left many fans wondering what they would plan next. Though content was scattered over time with variety shows, survival show appearances, and lesser-known digital singles (do yourself a favor and listen to “Airplane Mode”), it wasn’t a question of if, but rather when new music would drop.

“Good Day (Special Daileee)” feels like a proper transition from the school concepts that started Weeekly’s career: the loud and proud entrance of “Tag Me (@ Me),” the naive but resilient outlook of “Zig Zag,” and of course, the viral and memorable energy of “After School.” Though the following title tracks of “Holiday Party '' and “Ven para” continuously moved further away from their trio of predecessors, “Good Day (Special Daileee)”  delivers a smoother transition period.

The Graduation Aesthetic of “Good Day (Special Daileee)”

Just like the effects of graduation, this single offers a reset for Weeekly. Graduation is, as the lyrics say, “full of excitement,” but with it also comes nostalgia.* The opening scene for the music video presents Weeekly dressed in convocation gowns, seated at desks. As the line, “New dream, start, everything is perfect” rolls, viewers might feel a familiarity with the desk choreography of “Tag Me (@ Me).”

Thanks to choreographer Miyeon Yoon, “Good Day (Special Daileee)” helps Weeekly display something that feels like a  culmination of their current journey. Choreography has always been one of Weeekly’s greatest assets, and going this direction with “Good Day (Special Daileee)” works for what it is. It isn’t supposed to have some lore tied to the deepest depths of the universe; it’s a stand-alone song dedicated to the group and the fans for their patience and love.

The Musical Messages in “Good Day (Special Daileee)”

Certain elements aside from the graduation aesthetic also indicate a new path for the group. The chanty nature of the hook is effective, especially since many experience graduation as a collective rite of passage. It gives off the feeling of a crowd coming together into the next step of their lives. Additionally the refrains of “it’s a good day” feature an electric guitar, noting a potential switch. This change is also supported with the removal of their gowns and hats before the hook slides in for a second time.

“Good Day (Special Daileee)” showed Weeekly as determined and hopeful as ever. Though a digital single, a lot of care shines through in the track, its choreography, and its special video. It helped generate anticipation for Weeekly’s next steps, and that final wait will end soon: Weeekly will come back next week with their fifth EP [ColoRise] on November 1, 2023. Daileees rejoice—it will be a good day indeed.
