New in K-Pop

Spring is the season of new beginnings. As the leaves finally turn green and fresh flowers bloom, I couldn’t help but get inspiration from Spotify’s “New Music K-Pop” playlist. Revamp your music library with me as I dive into some recently released B-side tracks from seasoned artists and new faces.

“Green to yellow” - KANNI

KANNI began her idol career in 2016 as a contestant on the popular reality show Produce 101. After her elimination, she debuted as a member of GIRLKIND in 2018 and released her first solo single under the stage name Xeheun. Unfortunately, GIRLKIND disbanded shortly after in 2022.

KANNI is now a soloist, marking her first comeback in five years. She released her single album, Aphrillia, on April 16, featuring two title tracks and one B-side. “Green to yellow” is a relaxing R&B track with an acoustic melody. KANNI’s voice is light and airy, perfectly fitting the chill vibe.

The lyrics are about taking a late-night drive after sunset. KANNI sings that every day feels monotonous. She only sees a difference in the leaves as they fade from green to yellow; however, everything is flowing and peaceful as she drives, making the dull day more colorful.

“Rome” - BOL4

Originally a duo, Bolbbalgan4, or BOL4, debuted in 2016 after both members participated in the show Superstar K6. However, there was unfortunate news that Woo Jihyun would leave the group in 2020, and Ahn Jiyoung would continue to promote as a soloist. She recently released a new album titled Love.zip, with five tracks.

The third track, “Rome,” immediately caught my attention as I plan to visit Italy for the first time this summer. Rome is often labeled as one of the most romantic cities in the world, making it an appropriate fit for an album all about love. The lyrics are kept simple, with BOL4 singing about her overwhelming love for the city and the sense of freedom that surrounds her there. The pop track is upbeat and catchy, making it the perfect background music for any summer romance.

“Shy” - Hannah Jang (feat. Gist)

Hannah Jang is a former YG Entertainment trainee who made her independent solo debut in 2020. Since then, she has released five official singles and one new EP, Hannah’s Party.

“Shy” is the third track from her EP and features fellow independent artist Gist, who participated in Show Me The Money 777. It’s a seductive R&B track with lyrics that detail the remaining spark between two people who recently called things off. Although it might confuse things further, the couple can’t help but feel excited at the prospect of renewed intimacy. Hannah and Gist fit the genre well with their soulful voices and perfectly timed ad-libs, creating an all-around impressive track.
