Jeong Sewoon's Laid-back Delight: Unveiling the Charms of “Perfectly” from His Latest Mini-Album Quiz

Jeong Sewoon is back with his sixth mini-album Quiz and a title song of the same name, but it's another track off this EP that we’ll put in the spotlight today, the one named Perfectly.

True to Jeong Sewoon’s proven ability to craft catchy yet laid-back tunes, there’s plenty of smoothness to sing along to in this new album, which comes almost two years after his previous release. When artists, especially in the realm of K-Pop, go on such a hiatus, there’s always much anticipation for their next release, and we can say that Quiz does not disappoint those who came to love Jeong Sewoon’s peculiar style. In fact, all the tracks are consistent in the mood: this album ensures less than half an hour of somewhat languid, a bit cheeky at times, atmosphere. Which is not new to the singer’s music, but here it feels like it’s being approached with much more awareness. Without a carefree attitude, Jeong Sewoon manages to express himself with greater command and fluency. So, let’s shine a light on the song that we propose as Surprise of the Week.

While the title track, “Quiz,” with its jazzy vibe might catch the attention first, over a few listens it was “Perfectly,” the fourth track, that acted a bit like the sleeper hit of the bunch. Hence the “Surprise of the Week” crown - and the competition with other releases this week was fierce, including other artists’ work… But let’s not stray away from the topic.

“Perfectly” glides smoothly and feels unhurried to the ear. After an unassuming start, the chorus has you humming along mindlessly from the very first listen. You know when you’re at home doing something else and your body starts to follow the music, swaying gently with sliding steps? That's what you’d probably end up doing listening to this carefree tune.

Now and then it’s seasoned with a dash of warm saxophone, and the mix of Korean and English is so fluid in the singer's vocalization that one language blends into the other effortlessly.

You’d guess Jeong Sewoon sang this, and the other tracks of the EP, with a hint of a smile - and music such as this, which has all the potential to bring a smile to our faces too, is worth keeping close at hand in our everyday life.

So let’s take a quick look at the other songs of the album: the breezy “Quiz” grabs you by the hand and makes you jam right away, and then we take a stop to appreciate the punctuation in “Singer-songwridol” (does anyone have more insight into this funny word pun?). Next up it’s “sharpie (feat. Nightly)”, which sounds just like an American pop song out of the early 2000s. After “Perfectly”, we find the bubbly “Glow in the show” that could be the perfect OST to a romcom K-drama (please make it happen!). Number six on the list is ”Always”: a nice K-Pop tune with that distinct R&B/Soul flavor, and we can totally see TT challenges happening for this one. Actually, that much could be said also of some lines in the following “YOU ARE WITH ME!” (the title is capitalized, but there’s no shouting, Jeong Sewoon even whispers softly at some point). Finally, the mini-album is closed by “17”: don’t be fooled by the cheerful vibe, because the lyrics carry a subtext of self-reflection that adds weight to the song.
