Girls Run the World

This year has been jam-packed with debuts, comebacks, and world tours. Girl groups, specifically, have taken 2022 by storm, releasing hit single after hit single. Many of these tracks are up for major awards at both the Mnet Asian Music Awards and Melon Music Awards, but the B-sides are just as worthy of our attention. Let’s take a look at some of the best B-side tracks from new girl groups who made a name for themselves in 2022.

“Blue Flame” - LE SSERAFIM

LE SSERAFIM debuted on May 2 under SOURCE MUSIC with their first mini-album, FEARLESS. Despite the controversy regarding Kim Garam, who was removed from the group in July due to bullying allegations, LE SSERAFIM made waves with their bold concept. The group promotes self-confidence and the will to push forward despite what the world may think. “Blue Flame” is the third track from FEARLESS and the official theme song for the upcoming webtoon Crimson Heart. It’s a disco-funk song that shows off the members' vocal range and hypnotizing harmonies. The lyrics tell the story of five girls following a mysterious blue flame into the unknown. “Blue Flame” and Crimson Heart align with LE SSERAFIM’s concept of following your own individual desires rather than a predestined path to achieve success. “MVSK” - Kep1er

Kep1er was the first debut of 2022 following their formation on the survival show Girls Planet 999. The group released their mini-album, FIRST IMPACT, on January 3. Although the nine members are only contracted for two and a half years, they have managed to cultivate a loyal fanbase that grows with each new release. One of the most loved B-sides is “MVSK” from their debut album. The girls invite listeners to the world of Kep1er, encouraging everyone to take off their mask and show their true selves. What’s even more interesting about the track is the various genre changes. The blend of house, disco, and pop makes this B-side a fun dance track that will keep listeners on their toes. It’s unexpected and fresh, which is hard to come by nowadays with the plethora of new debuts and comebacks. Escape to Kep1er’s imaginary world by watching their debut performance of “MVSK” below.

“Hurt” - NewJeans

NewJeans stands to be the biggest debut of this year, releasing their self-titled album on August 1. The title track “Attention” made a splash on social media and skyrocketed the group to the top of the charts. Being the only group under HYBE’s newest subsidiary ADOR has certainly had its perks. The second and third lead singles have become just as popular as the title track due to the group’s thorough promotion schedule and catchy beats. “Hurt” is the sole true B-side from the album, and it shows off a softer side to NewJeans. The lyrics align with the popular saying, “actions speak louder than words.” Rather than reaching out to someone who’s grown distant, they state, “you should come and show me first.” It’s about putting your guard up when a relationship has hurt you one too many times before, but this time NewJeans declares, “I’m not gonna be the one to get hurt.” Despite the change in tempo, “Hurt” still has the same Y2K aesthetic that is present throughout the rest of the album. The members’ vocals shine, with the focal point of the track being their breathy falsetto and emotional lyrics.
