All-Rounder Sensation Hui Makes his Solo Debut with the Quirky “흠뻑(Hmm BOP)”

If you’re a fan of K-Pop but not familiar with Hui, you’re definitely familiar with his work. Making his debut in 2016 as the leader of PENTAGON, Hui has made a huge impact on the K-Pop industry in the following years in different ways. Most recently he was known for participating in Boys Planet, but before that he wrote some of the most influential K-Pop songs, including PENTAGON’s own “Shine” and WANNA ONE’s debut track, “Energetic.” If there ever was an all-rounder idol, it would be Hui. In that regard, it is somewhat surprising that he waited this long to make his solo debut, but the time has finally come.

Hui has written all different types of tracks, so it was hard to predict which direction he’d go for his solo debut. “흠뻑(Hmm BOP)” is a groovy, upbeat pop track which has Hui flaunting his vocal prowess. It’s notable that in the chorus he hits some ridiculously high notes, the likes of which I would expect from TVXQ!’s Changmin. The retro influences in the song make it particularly addicting, and the bright, high-energy melody brings some sunshine to the dark days of winter.

The catchy nature of the song is accompanied by a quirky and retro music video concept that’s impossible not to love. A pink haired Hui is surrounded by bright, eye-popping colors through the whole track, kicking off with him sitting in a fully pink room adorned with posters of colorful retro music. Hui does a great job of embodying the energy of the song and personifying the more quirky aspects of the video. My personal favorite part of the video, though, is the ending credits where we get a shot not just of Hui, but also the staff behind the camera grooving to the track. It sets an overall warm and joyful mood, which is great at this time of year.
