Within less than a year, KNK, the first male idol group of YNB Entertainment, has come back to knock on the doors of the K-Pop industry with their latest single album called Gravity. The album was released on May 25 with a total of four tracks including the title song “Sun, Moon, Star” and its instrumental version.

As per most idol groups, KNK released different sets of teaser photos, a highlight medley, and a music video teaser ahead of their album release date. As you may have guessed from the title of the track, the teaser photos were released in three sets with each set correlating to the celestial bodies mentioned in the title: the sun, moon, and star. While the star version of the photos was more subdued and made use of soft pastel colors, the moon version gives off an enchanting feel with the silver tones, and the sun version features the members in black and white suits against a contrasting red background. Increasing the expectations that fans had for the comeback, the highlight medley boasts the members’ versatile vocals with the music video teaser portraying the members of KNK in very aesthetically dreamy settings.

“Sun, Moon, Star” is a song about the sorrow of a man who can’t move on from the woman he loves after she’s left him. The woman who shines is his sun, moon, and star, and his world revolves around her, so despite trying to forget her, he really can’t. The mid-tempo beat and melodic verses are signature to Kim Taejoo’s style, the composer who worked on “Sun, Moon, Star.” It’s fitting with the sorrowful story and lyrics wrapped with the pain of the man after a breakup. Member Youjin belts high-note ad-libs in the last chorus which was incredibly impressive and pleasant to listen to. Additionally, unlike most K-Pop songs, “Sun, Moon, Star” doesn’t feature any rap parts, proving that member Seungjun, who is responsible for rap in the group, also has stable vocals. The decision to not add a rap seemed appropriate as a rap may not have fit so well into the nostalgic and whimsical vibe that the melody brought.

The foggy and hazy-like filter over the music video adds onto the nostalgic feel as it reflects the distant memory that is the woman who left him. As member Inseong sings about the days passing by, he rips off numerous pages from calendars stuck on the wall, signifying how he can’t forget the woman even after so many days. The members are also drinking a blue liquid in some of the scenes which could be to forget the woman. Furthermore, the music video contains scenes where the members dance in a dimly lit room with a blue, yellow, and pink colored background while dressed in sleek white suits. The choreography itself is also worth noting as the group has mentioned that leader Jihoon took on the challenge of choreographing the dance to pay homage to “Ribbon” by Highlight. The fans watched the choreography with this piece of information in mind as they spotted subtle connections between the two choreographies.

Although “Sun, Moon, Star” is not your typical pop song, it has its own charm with the dreamy and whimsical vibe and is a song filled with emotions that may be relatable to some listeners who are going or have been through a breakup. KNK is a rookie group that is also rising in the industry as they continue to experiment with different sounds and release songs with great hooks and melodies.
