GOT7 members Yugyeom and JB partnered up to bring IGOT7 a new member unit, Jus2. The duo released their debut mini-album FOCUS on March 5. The album contains six songs that work together to present a new, more sensual vibe to their fans.  

“Focus On Me”: The Title Track

As someone who was only a casual listener of GOT7, this track was more than I expected. “Focus on Me” fits in the hazy realm between the pop and dance genre; the simple sounding melody paired with the snappy base is refreshing. The track alone feels incomplete by itself. However, once the vocals are added on top of it, it's complete. I think this completeness definitely lends a hand to the skilled vocals of the duo.

The Music Video 

The music video was fascinating to watch, and the sets were clean and simple. My favorite part of the entire video, however, was the chorus. As Yugyeom and JB were singing the chorus, they were strutting down a runway with things that resemble people watching them. It fit the vibe of the song so well.

“Drunk on You” and “Long Black”

In the words of popular K-Pop YouTuber JREKML, this is “bread making” (a euphemism for sensual) music. “Drunk on You” has the elements of a traditional R&B track. It is definitely a percussion-heavy song. The verses are mostly the members’ voices over a guitar, but as they lead into the pre-chorus and chorus, the onslaught of percussion begins. Towards the end of the track, the heavy percussion begins to drop away, leaving the delicate sound of the guitar to accompany the voices. “Long Black” is the more traditional sounding R&B, with a slow dance melody winding the energy in the room down without completely killing the vibe. These tracks are definitely being added to the “Getting Ready to go out,” playlist.

“Senses” and “Love Talk”

“Senses” and “Love Talk” are the songs that I can see myself dancing to in a club. They both center around EDM sounds. “Senses” is the smoother of the two tracks with the simple high-low beat patterns. The high beat sounds like a clapping noise, while the lower beat is a simple 808 bass. The chorus adds another layer to the rhythm, mixing in a shaker sound similar to maracas. “Love Talk” on the other hand comes out of nowhere with a beat that is immediately suitable to fist bumps. Unlike “Senses,” “Love Talk” sticks to the electronic sounding bassline, making it even more suited to EDM. “Love Talk” is the track that I can see a club going crazy to at the beginning of a wild night, and “Senses” is the track that will bring them down.

“Touch”

The best way for me to describe this song is that it fits the “Emo Hours” vibe. It doesn't necessarily fit a sexy or dance vibe; it fits in between multiple genres and adds the final touch needed to round out the already well-planned album.

Overall, I really liked this album and it sets a good stage for a debut. With this strong of a debut, I think that this duo will be seeing a lot more attention in the future.
