B-Sides: Recent Repeats

A common K-Pop experience is anticipating a summer comeback with bated breath. The summer just invites new albums, so this week in B-Sides, we will look at three tracks from recent comebacks that really caught our attention.

“1°” - GOT7

From their album Spinning Top: Between Security & Insecurity released in May, this track showcases GOT7’s growth into a more mature sound as artists. The maknae member Yugyeom composed the song, and he expertly weaves transitions into a smooth backtrack. The track is sensual yet powerful with its string synth and haunting melody that makes you want to keep listening.

The track echoes the album’s name because the group wrestles with falling into insecurity like a spinning top if they move just one degree. The track is set in a romantic context, but it still seems to reflect the group as a whole. The vulnerability in the members’ voices is evident, but they also radiate strength as a unified group.

A stand-out part of the track is the first chorus where vocalist member Youngjae sings falsetto against an isolated bass and sparse synth. The track is entrancing and formidable, and GOT7 shows you that even though they may be insecure, you cannot knock them down.

“Chica” - CHUNGHA

Soloist Chungha is back with this track from her album Flourishing: 4th Mini Album, and it is nothing short of a female empowerment anthem. She encourages you to reveal your true and beautiful self, no matter what other people say about you. She also expresses her own confidence as a woman in a simple yet effective chorus.

Indicated by the title, the track has some Spanish influence in its style. Chungha smoothly blends Korean, English, and a little bit of Spanish in a unique way. She is clearly in her element with her confident vocals and fun sound. Even though she is a young artist, she displays an experienced sound that makes you excited for her future.

“Sunny Side Up” - RED VELVET

Finishing up the list on a strong note, Red Velvet’s track from their recently released album The ReVe Festival: Day 1, is an entirely sensual experience. The deep, plodding bass and their smooth vocals create a suave sound that is irresistible. Their moments of unison and dissonant harmonies entrance you to listen to every word they say.

Just like the image of a sunny side up egg, the song is very carefully composed with its specific parts, but the members pull it off expertly. The shift between the major and minor chords with their sliding voices leave you on the edge of your seat in curiosity. Also, the track manages to highlight each individual voice in such a satisfying way.

Overall, the song is chill with a touch of playfulness as the members transition between different rhythms and complicated ad libs. Red Velvet shows off their chemistry and experience as a group with this smooth track.
