Yezi Gets Cheeky in New Single “MIMEW”

Since officially going solo, Yezi has proven to be a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to musical talent, with much of her solo work shining more light on her vocal ability. As the former rapper of FIESTAR gained a fair amount of attention on Unpretty Rapstar for her deep and fierce rapping tone, she’s been showing a new side to herself as a talented vocalist in singles like “My Gravity” and “HOME.” “MIMEW” brings a new angle to the artist, showcasing both her vocal and strong rap abilities in a fun, playful package.

Yezi has been focused on more heartfelt, serious messages in her recent singles, but we see a complete 180 here with “MIMEW.” Right off the bat, the song has a light and mischievous air. Yezi kicks in with a smooth half-vocal half-rap verse, where it’s notable that her rap tone is much more subdued than usual. It’s only after that that she breaks into a full rap bar in her signature deep style, which is an interesting contrast from the tone set by the melody. In addition, it really highlights the significant difference between her vocal tone and rap tone, which is a first since the two are often not used in conjunction. The chorus brings in an infectious EDM beat accompanied by the repeated phrase of “meow” to solidify the melody in your memory, and it’s certainly contagious. The track does a great job of accompanying the overall picture of a mischievous cat, and it’s a great example of Yezi being able to mold together her vocal and rap talents.

The music video is a perfect complement to the song, with a lot of animation effects used to create an otherworldly atmosphere. While they do bring a cartoonish feel to the song, the animations are rather dark in nature, like the moment we see Yezi remove the top of her head or the dogs that are shown on the television with a rather grotesque appearance. Yezi does a great job personifying a cat, both in actions and facial expressions. The video all around just completes the feeling of the song and together they make a great single return for the talented artist.
