NCT 2020 Resonates With “RESONANCE”
Delayed two hours due to additional editing needed to improve the quality of the video, NCT 2020’s “RESONANCE” video dropped just shortly after 8 p.m. KST on December 4, 2020. Opening with Mark giving a call to action for the group, the video and audio start to go a bit corrupted, panning in on the 23 members before the song begins only to find out that “RESONANCE” is actually a mash-up of four tracks from the RESONANCE albums—“Make A Wish (Birthday Song),” “Raise The Roof,” “90’s Love,” and “Work It”—with a few extra shouts and flair to “Raise The Roof” to make it really resonate.
“Raise The Roof” is what brings the members together, but the other three tracks are where the sub-units come into play. In fact, that’s what makes the track and video interesting—rather than following the same direction that the NCT 2018 video for “Black on Black” went where we saw the (at the time) 18-member group perform one song where the members with lines got most of the spotlight, “RESONANCE” does a good job at making sure all the boys are seen. Obviously no video is perfect, so your favorite member might not get the most screen time, but by doing this, it gives each of the 23 members a chance to shine.
Each track also gets its own space, with “Make A Wish (Birthday Song)” going with the rugs vibe from the music video at the beginning of “RESONANCE” and then a flowy, curtain vibe at the end. The spot for “90’s Love” features a colorful floor pattern featuring blue, orange, and white, the colors seen in the hockey outfits from the music video. “Work It”’s set gets a bit of an industrial feel from the corrugated metal floor, which doesn’t really call back to the main music video other than perhaps the shipping containers Johnny dances in front of. It would’ve been nice to see maybe some of the neon lit floors from the music video make an appearance for the “Work It” set.
Along with the sets for the three title tracks, we get the group performing “Raise The Roof” on a stage with loads of light surrounding them, but the track also gets its own set as well, featuring red walls and a wire cloth weaved floor.
While it is nice to see more members get a spotlight in “RESONANCE,” the one thing missing is a really good, zoomed-out view of all 23 members dancing like we got in “Black on Black.” The camera does a lot of panning in and out, rotating around the stage, and letting the lights shine into the camera, so you miss out on a lot of the group choreography.
With all that said, make sure to check out the music video for “RESONANCE” below. It’s fun from beginning to end and is definitely one you won’t want to miss, especially if you have more than one bias, which, with NCT, really isn’t that difficult.
