iKON Takes A “Dive” Into Their New Era

iKON has made their anticipated first comeback since major line-up changes with i DECIDE. The title track “Dive” is the group’s first release without previous leader, B.I. Interestingly enough, the former member is still present in this release having credits as a co-writer to the song. BOBBY is also credited for writing "Ah Yeah," "All the World," and "Flower,” completing the EP along with “Holding On” and fellow member DK co-wrote and produced “Flower.” In announcing the comeback, YG Entertainment asked audiences to keep an eye out for iKON's evolution and directionality.

The music video is classic YG: high-production value, theatrical, and yet still somehow simplistic. Each member has his spotlight in their uniquely designed room (think BIGBANG “Monster”), then bringing it all back to the group for choreography shots (think 2NE1 “I Am The Best”). It’s old school K-Pop and interestingly refreshing in the age of movie-like music videos with intriguing plotlines. What connects it all visually is the destruction, broken bridges, blown up walls, and a lot of fire.

“Dive” remains with what seems to be the current trend in K-Pop and delivers a unique EDM track. However, it carries elements of country, compared by Billboard to Pitbull and Ke$ha’s timeless “Timber.” Upon first listen, it’s a surprising element of the song, but it soon falls into place. Overtly EDM tracks can get tiring and all fuse into one for the general public. If this is the path the new era of K-Pop is to follow, having surprising elements like those in iKON’s “Dive” proves for an exciting new generation.
