VERIVERY’s Thunderous Comeback

After a run on Road to Kingdom, VERIVERY is back with their shocking latest comeback, “Thunder,” off of their fourth mini-album FACE YOU.

“Thunder” sees the group part ways with the retro style that has been with them since debut. The trap beats and battle-cry-like vocals fit in with popular boy group releases of today, and although the release isn’t particularly a dark concept, it’s certainly a darker twist for VERIVERY. Meanwhile, the music video for “Thunder” is extremely cinematic, with the video opening with a viewer’s rating title screen and ending with rolling credits. The plot follows the boys as they use thunder-charged superhero abilities to solve a mystery, amidst various choreography shots.

“Beautiful-x” also makes its official release on FACE YOU, and with it returns VERIVERY’s knack for rhythmic dance tracks. The track was originally performed as their final stage on Road to Kingdom and though they ultimately did not win the competition, the performance surely garnered the group new fans. “Connect” is the next song on the album and places more emphasis on the rap verses than many of VERIVERY’s past releases, particularly allowing Dongheon and Hoyoung to shine. “SKYDIVE” is another dance track, and the omnipresent bubbling synths in the song give the track an almost 90’s city-pop feel. The album closes out with the impressive R&B-influenced “Privacy,” a song whose blues guitar gives the track a surprisingly sensual feel. For a group still as young as VERIVERY, the mature vibe is certainly a surprise, but it’s one that does wonders for the mini-album.
