BLOO - MOON AND BACK
K-Hip-Hop artist BLOO has released his second album of 2021 titled MOON AND BACK with seven new original songs and one jazz remix of the album single “Girl in New York.” This album is an homage to R&B laced with nostalgia, reluctant acceptance, and a sprinkle of romance as a seemingly sad following to his previous album, BLOO IN WONDERLAND 2. He tells a love story with the lyric, “I love you to the moon and back,” in the first song “but I’ll wait for you,” and ends it with, “I loved you to the moon and back,” in the final song “the day we first met.”
“but I’ll wait for you” opens the album with a somber promise to wait for a girl, repeated over and over again in earnest. As the song progresses, he comes to the realization that maybe it’s time to move on. It’s a stream of consciousness, almost drunk in thought, as he fights between waiting for his love and letting go.
“Don’t say goodbye” is reminiscent of that anxiousness of realizing you’re slowly losing the one you love. With lyrics like, “if you’re not here, I’m not alright,” and, “don’t say goodbye,” you can feel BLOO struggling to accept that the end of the relationship is coming. This is the point in the album’s story when the real heartbreak begins.
“Understand Me” is the denial stage in a breakup. “If you don’t tell me why 내가 어떻게 살아,” screams desperation as BLOO sings that he doesn’t know how he’ll live without an explanation. He missed her the whole day and keeps his phone in hand in hopes of hearing from her—though it’s clear she has cut all communication.
“Girl in New York,” the album’s single, comes fourth in the album. The beat gives ‘80s romance song vibes as BLOO sings of longing to be with this girl from New York City. He sings about seeing her “fire” pictures and missing her lips as he gets drunker as the night goes on. It’s not clear whether this is the same girl that he is in denial about being separated from or maybe just another girl that he has a flame for.
“Pick up the phone” starts with a gentle Latin vibe and moves a little more into the anger phase of a breakup. BLOO mentions, “싫어 우린 아니잖아 남이” (“I don’t like it, it’s not us”) as he waits all night for the girl to pick up the phone, eventually falling asleep. He alludes to going “Thugger and Scott,” a reference to Travis Scott and Young Thug’s song “Pick Up the Phone,” which is about creating a night to remember.
“DADDY” takes a huge 180-degree twist from the previous songs on the album. In the song, he sees a girl that takes his breath away (“Drop drop jaws dropped, 그녀가 내게 걸어올 때”). From there, he promises to be her “Daddy,” to buy her things from dinner to a trip to Cali. He’s moved on from his heartbreak and found another.
“the day we first met’”s somber piano brings the end and acceptance of the breakup. It’s a retelling of the day he first met the girl and how nervous he was, but how smoothly the conversation went. He ends it with, “I loved you to the moon and back,” showing that he has let go and it’s a thing of the past.
