Level Up and Let’s Play with LUCY

If you’ve been following the band LUCY for a while, you know that they will always deliver in having an anime-esque, whimsical release. In their latest album, INSERT COIN, they bring another set of songs that takes you on an adventure like you’re navigating a video game as the title suggests.

Tracklist:

  1. “Unbelievable”

  2. “Tied up”

  3. “Never in vain”

  4. “Fill it up”

“Unbelievable”

Time to brush off the winter cold and greet spring with an upbeat and cheerful vibe. That is exactly what “Unbelievable” is, as it gives a great boost of serotonin and all-around warmth. If you’re ever feeling down or unsure of yourself, “Unbelievable” will cheer you up as it encourages embracing one’s beauty and self. Throughout the lyrics, LUCY points out there are different qualities that they may not understand and find different, but in the end, what they believe is that you (the listener) are still beautiful and an unbelievable person.

Sticking to the theme of the album, the music video transports those into a video game setting, taking inspiration from Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and other nostalgic pixel games. It features the members as the main characters of the video game they’re in, and in every story, there is an antagonist that they have to defeat. Based on the lyrics of the song, the villain in the music video can be viewed as the doubt or negative thoughts that one person may have about themselves, and what LUCY does is try and defeat these types of feelings to further show that, regardless, they are still beautiful.

Like in all video games, when it comes to the music, there will also be tones that are much darker and more somber. “Never in vain” and “Fill it up” are those types of songs that bring you down from the excitement and hype compared to “Unbelievable” and “Tied up.” While they’re not necessarily sad songs, LUCY transports you into the fantasy of a video game that has the ups and downs of any story, which makes this release so special. LUCY doesn’t hesitate to show you different colors of their sound, but still makes it such a delight to listen. It’s only a matter of time until this band gets swept up to participate in an anime or video game’s soundtrack.

LUCY never fails in putting out a solid release that will get you to either smile or put you in your feels. They are definitely a group that continues to improve and get better and better over time. As one of the few bands that are out there, LUCY is well worth the recommendation to listen to and get into if you haven’t already.
