I'm So Curious About SHINee's "Sherlock"

When you hear the phrase “Kings of K-Pop,” who comes to mind? It might be a modern group like BTS or even a classic like BIGBANG. But for me, the ones I think of will always be SHINee

The comeback that solidified this group as a legend in my mind was their 2012 release “Sherlock (Clue +Note).” It experimentally combined two separate songs to make something totally new and different. Some of you may have heard these iconic words: “SHINee’s back.” These words are not only a repeating motif in SHINee’s music, but the unforgettable start of “Sherlock.” The music kicks in and the members fan out in a choreography that lives in the memory of Shawols.

Though “Sherlock”’s mischievous music video did not particularly showcase their dancing, their live performances certainly did. Indeed, out of all the things they did (and do) well, perhaps performing is at the top of the list. With Jonghyun’s inspiring vocals, TAEMIN’s unparalleled dance, and the incredible voices of the rest of the group, SHINee truly offered a show that could not be matched. “Sherlock” is truly a performer’s song. What makes it so great can’t be described but must be seen and heard, interpreted, and brought to life by the performers themselves.

“Sherlock” was met with both critical and commercial success. It topped the Gaon International Chart and even earned itself a Golden Disk Award. It’s been covered by dance YouTubers and other idol groups, including TXT (Tomorrow x Together) and ATEEZ.

Not only is “Sherlock” an incredible song, it also birthed a situation that is, simply put, legendary among Shawols. Taemin is known as one of K-Pop’s greatest dancers. His movements are graceful, sweeping, and broad, so broad that even his own clothes can’t keep up with him!  During one of SHINee’s promotional “Sherlock” performances, Taemin very obviously ripped his pants in the final moments of the song. A quick search reveals dozens of videos not just of this moment but also all the other times Taemin has ripped his pants!

Why “Sherlock” is great can’t fully be expressed in words. It’s one of those comebacks you show your friends who are K-Pop skeptics. It’s one of those songs that your dad, your mom, your brother, and your niece could all equally enjoy. In other words, it transcends. That’s not just the highest goal of K-Pop, but the highest goal of music itself.
