I.M Is Back With New Comeback “OVERDRIVE”

I.M is back and has wowed us all with his new comeback. I.M is a member of the popular boy group MONSTA X under Starship Entertainment, who has been releasing absolute bangers since 2015. It was no surprise that I.M would drop a fantastic six-song EP. With his last single and EP being in 2021, we were excited to hear from him again. This is also his first EP since signing with Sony Music Korea, and the anticipation to hear from him was through the roof.

Title Track - “OVERDRIVE”

The title track “OVERDRIVE” is amazing and captures the true essence of I.M. The action-packed video, plus scenes of his visuals, was a sight to see. The R&B and hip-hop mixture that he is known for merged together beautifully. The song itself showcases I.M’s spectacular lyrical and rapping skills, and holds a deep meaning. While listening to the song, listeners might wonder what the meaning is. When watching the video and really sitting back and hearing the lyrics, listeners realize that I.M is saying no matter what is in his way, he is going to push through and achieve his goals. It is a beautiful message in a well-executed rap song.

OVERDRIVE B-Sides

The EP consists of five other songs: “Blame,” “Dumb,” “Habit,” “More,” and “Not Sorry.” Each song on the EP was written by I.M and exhibits the love and passion he has for his art. The songs are all in the genres of R&B and rap, though there are hints of jazz in there as well. The first B-side “Blame” talks about the hurt and pain one feels when they lose the love of their life. In the song, he talks about the agony and confusion as to why they are leaving. It is a song about heartbreak that tugs at everyone's heartstrings.

“Dumb” talks about a person who is in love with someone but that person doesn’t feel the same way. Lyrics like, “We’ve been talkin’ love but you never know,” and, “I am not just a guy to deny, baby,” show that he really wants to be with this person, but they just don’t see them in that same light. It shows his version of the emotion of being in a situation like that.

“Habit” has the hint of jazz that was mentioned above. In the song, he talks about how in love he is with this person. He can’t leave this person, he is attached to this person, and it’s hard to separate from them no matter how bad they are for him. While swaying side to side from the beat, you can’t help but take in the lyrics of this story.

Next is the song called “More.” This song had us all vibing with the slow R&B sound, and blasting this song through your headphones is the way to go. In the song, he talks about how he wants more of this person, and how he can’t get enough of them. It is a jaw-dropping song that will have you moving your head to the beat.

The last song on the EP is called “Not Sorry.” The jazz sound is back and will definitely have you dancing along. While you’re dancing, you notice the lyrics and sit back and think about what he is saying. The lyrics are about him falling out of love; he doesn’t want to be in this relationship anymore, and he doesn’t want to be with them anymore. It is a fun dance along with a deep story behind it showing I.M’s amazing storytelling skills.

As a MONBEBE, I was super excited to hear from I.M and to listen to this comeback. This entire EP captures his personality and vibe as a whole. We all know of I.M’s lyrical and rapping abilities from his work in MONSTA X, but his work in this album is story-worthy. While the title track is about his goals and pushing through the challenges, the B-sides all tell a story of someone going through the motions of love. This EP is great, and leaves MONBEBEs and K-Pop listeners excited for his projects in the future.
