Group Highlight: WJSN (Cosmic Girls)
Starship Entertainment’s latest debuted mega group WJSN is composed of the most members of any other group these days, with 13 girls rounding out the roster. While the sheer number of members can be daunting to some, these girls definitely shouldn’t be overlooked just because of the size of their group. With their first attendance at KCON LA upcoming, we thought we’d take a deeper look into the young group for those new to their name.
The Concept and Background
As the name suggests, WJSN or Cosmic Girls is represented as not humans, but otherworldly beings from space. Each member represents each sign of the zodiac (with the addition of Yeonjung from I.O.I after the initial debut). As a different member of the zodiac, each girl symbolizes a different star, hence the use of the word “cosmic.” The rather creative concept is no stranger to veteran K-Pop fans, as it is reminiscent of EXO’s original concept involving superpowers.
Luckily, WJSN has been broken down into four separate units for each letter to make it a bit easier to learn and distinguish the members. Wonder members include Bona, Cheng Xiao, and Dayoung. The Joy unit is composed of Xuan Yi, Eunseo, and Yeoreum. The Sweet unit is made up of Seola, Exy, and Soobin. And finally, the Natural unit has the remaining members Luda, Dawon, Mei Qi, and Yeonjung.
Before debut, only a few members were shown publicly. Leader Exy was a contestant on Unpretty Rapstar 2 while oldest member Seola made a cameo in label mate BOYFRIEND’s music video “Janus,” and Eunseo did the same in MONSTA X’s “Rush.” The group’s debut was officially on February 25, 2016, with the girls tearing up the music scene ever since. They were nominated for “Best New Artist (Female Group)” and “HotelsCombined Artist of the Year” in the 2016 Mnet Asian Music Awards, as well as “Best New Artist” in the MelOn Music Awards and “New Artist of the Year” in the Golden Disc Awards.
