Weekly Charts: September 11-17
In this second week of September, there has been very little movement among the charts. First through fourth places have been the same except on one chart. With only a handful of new songs debuting into the Top 10, it looks like we will have to wait till next week to see the latest comebacks of digital monsters BTS and IU shake up the rankings!
Welcome Back
You may have had ambivalent feelings towards mega boy group EXO’s earlier comeback song “Ko Ko Bop,” but now how do you feel about their latest serving, “Power”? The song debuts at a welcomed second place on Gaon chart but is absent from others. Reminiscent of their more playful days of XOXO Repackage, the song taps into the members’ beagle charms and is unexpectedly light-hearted. Befitting of the current 80s throwback theme trending everywhere now, the song reminds us strongly of a graphic novel or old-time arcade game!
Another artist who is familiar with being at the top of the charts isn’t even from South Korea. Sam Smith should be pleased to find his latest song, “Too Good At Goodbyes” debuting on Bugs! at fourth place. Don’t be too surprised at this turn of events. Koreans are famously in love with his songs as they always hit the right spots for Koreans’ addiction to ballads. This latest ballad is just as much of an angst-fest, perfect for the cooler, more sentimental weather!
Woo Wonjae went from a regular university student to overnight hip-hop sensation thanks to his presence on Show Me the Money 6. It looks like he will be enjoying the spotlight a little bit longer as his song “We Are” continues to claim first place on all the charts. If you’re wondering what all the hype is about, give it a listen!
New Additions
Although he isn’t part of legendary idol group TVXQ anymore, Kim Junsu remains a force to be reckoned with as both fans and the general public trust his brand of musicianship. His song “Love That is Too Painful is Not Love” has made it to ninth place despite zero promotions. Through sheer loyalty of his fans and those who appreciate his artistry, the musical number has found a place on Koreans’ playlists.
Girl group GFRIEND also came back with a repackaged album, and this time the six-membered group is ready for some “Summer Rain.” The song debuts at a comfortable sixth place. While it isn’t any different from the rest of the group’s songs, it is a sound that is easy to fall back to if you aren’t looking for something ground-breaking or too radical. Traditional and comfortable. That seems to be the musical route GFRIEND has taken.
