Band of the Week: Eve
Welcome back to another Band of The Week! This week, we feature Korea’s first glam band Eve. The band was created on Christmas Eve in 1997, hence the name Eve. Created by lead singer Kim Seheon and keyboardist, composer, and backup vocalist G.Gorilla, the band has seen many changes in its line-up. However, the current and original members are as above, plus Park Woong on guitar and Kim Gun on bass.
Their musical style has always channeled the late ‘80s rock glam flare with hits such as “Whenever You Feel” and “Agape.” However, they also had a punk edge like with their hit “Aspirin.” Their most popular album Swear came at the peak of their popularity, giving audiences their usual rock hits and romantic ballads. Additionally, their dark, moody, as well as flashy wardrobe created a style movement Koreans had not seen before. The gothic trend became popular in alternative Korean culture.
The creative differences that broke up the band in the early 2000s couldn’t keep them apart forever. They reunited in 2016 with Kim Heechul of Super Junior with the single “Melody” off of their eleventh album Romantic Show. The song attracted lots of attention from Eve fans; it was the first time in more than a decade that the original members were back together. Romantic Show consisted of beautiful rock ballads, demonstrating the creativity fans loved in the late ‘90s and early 2000s.
Their latest hit, “Candle,” another rock ballad from Romantic Show, reflects on a relationship that has withered away. In the song, the narrator talks about how their love melted away like a candle left alone. The narrator wallows in his deep sadness, eventually lashing out at the “bad girl” who left him. Overall, it’s a great breakup song for anyone going through the same pain.
With Romantic Show out, the band decided to hold concerts in Seoul and Busan this past February. Eve fans rejoiced over the concerts, which coincided with the band’s 20-year anniversary on December 24, 2017.
There have been rumors of a new album in the making, but nothing official has been stated. Be sure to catch up on all of Eve’s greatest hits and B-sides in anticipation for their next album. Hopefully it will come out soon!
