SF9 Exclaims “Mamma Mia!”

The charming boys of SF9 are back with a retro and cute concept in “Mamma Mia!” Unlike previous releases that focused on intense and sometimes serious concepts, “Mamma Mia” shows a more carefree and fun side, allowing the personalities of the boys of SF9 to shine.

Make Way for the Fun Boys!

If you’re familiar with the members of SF9, you know that as a whole they have quite a high level of energy and personality. They’re noisy, fun, and relentlessly energetic. For the first time their comeback concept really allows this aspect of the boys to shine, allowing them to be their goofy selves in front of the camera.

SF9 has attempted many different concepts since debut, with the hard-hitting bad boy concepts of “Fanfare” and “Roar” to emotionally intense concepts of “Easy Love” and “O Sole Mio,” but have yet to explore the cute realm despite their fitting personalities. “Mamma Mia” finally gives us this concept, along with a 1950’s Grease-like aesthetic that is very pleasing and creative, full of eye-catching bright colors. The video is so pleasing, in fact, we can even forgive the terrible bright green mullet leader Youngbin was given, and maybe even those horrid dreadlocks Dawon didn’t deserve to have happen to him (I thought we were learning to be better than this, FNC!) As expected of SF9, the choreography is fast and complicated, yet executed perfectly and professionally.

Much like the bright and energetic aesthetic, “Mamma Mia” is a track that matches in intensity with a fast tempo and catchy beat. The song definitely brings out summer vibes and reminds the listener of a nice day at the beach. Quite a nice reminder in the middle of the barren winter, isn’t it? The chorus of “Mamma Mia” is guaranteed to get stuck in your head after the first listen, and you’ll definitely find yourself humming the tune at work the next day.

As far as the mini-album’s B-Sides, SF9 shows their musical versatility by jumping between high energy pop tracks and soft ballads. “Never Say Goodbye” and “Midnight Road” are two of the warm ballad tracks that showcase the vocal talent, and in addition “Midnight Road” is a soft and sexy love song that happens to be my favorite. Talk about a contrast to title track “Mamma Mia!”

Additionally, the final track on the album titled “Dear Fantasy” is a happy, bouncy and sweet poem dedicated to SF9’s fanbase, Fantasies. It’s impossible not to find a fond smile forming on your face after listening to such a sweet and upbeat song dedicated to the fans.

SF9 has struggled to gain attention in this boy group saturated market, but they continuously prove that they deserve their time in the spotlight with versatility not just in their music style, but in comeback concepts and talents. “Mamma Mia” is certainly going to be this summer’s anthem!
