PENTAGON Positively Shines With New Mini-Album

Cube Entertainment’s popular boy group PENTAGON is back with a new cheerful and cute concept! The boys’ newest title “Shine” isn’t your run-of-the-mill cute concept, instead having a very unique sound, aesthetic, and choreography that just isn’t like anyone else.

We’re Always a Loser in Front of Love

Perhaps the greatest charm of all with “Shine” is the uniqueness of its sound. The song begins with a staccato piano line—a surprising amount of silence between each phrase until member E’Dawn begins his verse. A light hip-hop beat begins and forms fully when Hui comes in, bringing in a smooth harmony in contrast to the sharp and short piano.

That hip-hop beat becomes addicting and just as eccentric as the initial combination sounds. It’s difficult to place the exact genre of this title, which in my opinion makes it even better. Before you know it, you’ll have “Shine” on repeat and have watched the music video 20 times in a row.

Speaking of, the music video is an intriguing combination of cute and quirky. The outfit aesthetics give the boys a young and boyish charm, and the school setting alludes to a young, first love story along with the lyrics. We haven’t seen this playful image from PENTAGON before, yet the boys pull it off flawlessly in the video. The choreography is totally different from what we’ve seen before as well, with the same boyish and even humorous charm that appears lighthearted.

With such a surprisingly stellar title track and music video, can the rest of the mini-album live up? Well, that comes down to personal taste. My favorite B-side, to no one’s surprise, is the rap unit’s track “Do It For Fun 재밌겠다.” With every PENTAGON album that comes out, I always anticipate the rap line focused track that’s almost always guaranteed to be on there, and I have yet to be let down. “Do It For Fun 재밌겠다” is almost the polar opposite of “Shine,” focusing way more on the swag vibe in comparison to cute and quirky.

Although I’m already a fan of most of PENTAGON’s releases, I’m really blown away by how much I enjoyed this particular comeback. With such a unique sound and concept, who would even dream of rejecting the confessions of these 10 boys?
