Throwback Thursday: Best of VIXX
Welcome back to another Throwback Thursday! For a while now, we have covered some of the best releases from particular groups, and we’re so excited by the teasers for the new release from VIXX that we decided to cover them this week, though it is difficult to pick just a few amazing tracks from this group!
“Voodoo Doll”
Potentially one of VIXX’s most notorious releases, “Voodoo Doll” was certainly the edgiest release of its time. The group even had to release a “clean” version of the music video because of the amount of gore in the video production. It’s not often that the K-Pop scene sees a concept and aesthetic this downright dark, but that level of deviation from the norm is exactly what got this group noticed. And speaking personally, “Voodoo Doll” was what solidified my interested in the group. A group having the guts to attempt a concept that was so out-there was enough to garner them the attention they deserved among a sea of other groups.
*TRIGGER WARNING: GORE*
“Chained Up”
Once again pushing the boundaries of accepted concepts, the 2015 release “Chained Up” was not only sexy on the base level, but even delved slightly into the realm of BDSM. How this was gone about was very tasteful, as it’s much more implied than actually illustrated, which could have been a factor in pushing this concept over the edge into unacceptable. The ability of VIXX to straddle that line so elegantly is what makes this release truly great. For the naive, the BDSM undertones are completely overlooked, which is exactly the right way to present such a potentially controversial topic. “Chained Up” is a true masterpiece.
“Shangri-La”
Was there a more aesthetically pleasing release of 2017? “Shangri-La” is another fine example of how VIXX tends to present unique concepts that have never quite been done before by any of their male group counterparts. While there was an element of sexy associated with the concept, it was much more toned down in favor of pure elegance. The unique choreography that utilized traditional fans was absolutely breathtaking, and the traditional Korean elements laced throughout the song, outfits, and concept itself were just stellar. It was a truly beautiful display all around and one that should not be forgotten any time soon. Even as recently as last year, VIXX has continued to prove their talents through unique concepts and to continuously deliver greatness for K-Pop fans.
