Make Space in Your Playlist for DPR Live
Six months after the release of his EP HER, DPR Live is back with a new single titled “Playlist” where he continues to show off his great talent as a rapper. The music video and song were released June 12.
The music video draws you in right away. It does not take long before the music starts, ditching a long instrumental intro. We jump right into things as the rapping starts a few seconds into the video. The song has a chill vibe, and you can’t help but nod your head along to the beat while listening to it. The beat is fairly repetitive, but in the best way possible. The track contains some easter eggs such as a small reference to Drake’s “Hotline Bling” in both lyrics and melody, giving it a few interesting twists and turns. Towards the end of the song, a piano is added into the melody and the instrumental speeds up, giving it a salsa sound before slowing down again. The end of the song is just as abrupt as the beginning, and it leaves the listener wanting more.
A lot happens in the music video. The format changes along with the animations and 3D effects used throughout. Animals such as tigers, monkeys, and donkeys appear and multicolored umbrellas are used as props. The people in the video occasionally move outside of the format of the video marking the 3D effects. Special effects are used at various points throughout, including scenes depicting DPR Live holding an umbrella at the start of the video and the changing the colors of a brick wall, and the donkey and the monkey in a couple of later scenes. The colors used in the video vary from warm to cool-toned hues, with vivid oranges, yellows, reds, purples, and greens. These colors are present in the background on the walls and on clothing. They are also used for the lighting and, of course, the animations. There is so much going on in the video—it really is something you have to watch over and over again to fully comprehend everything that’s happening. It’s a guarantee you’ll always notice something new you had not seen before.
With more releases slated from DPR Live, fans (and myself) are eagerly waiting to see what’s next for the artist.
