Style Behind BLACKPINK’s “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du”

BLACKPINK is the Revolution! BLACKPINK is finally back after a whole year with their first mini-album. Everyone has been anticipating their comeback for some time after they made a huge debut from YG Entertainment. “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” is a hip-hop track combined with trap beats, so their style has a lot of charisma. BLACKPINK has been a style icon in Korea since their debut in 2016.

Music Video

In their music video, they rocked so many different chic and luxurious looks including clothes, makeup, nails, and hair. Their main color themes are, of course, black and pink. The main theme of the song is not being influenced by the public to change your appearance and to be who you want to be, inside and out. All of the BLACKPINK members are able to pull off different unique color schemes; for example, Jennie rocked a rainbow colored dress in their music video and it just made her look like a luxurious Queen. In my opinion, that persona is what people view of her, but her inside appearance, which she is now going to let out into the world, is different. Lisa wore a full pink outfit to show their unique colors from their group name and to embrace the color pink for women. Rosé had a moment in the music video where she was shown in all red including her hair, jewellery, clothes, and background which represents energy, war, and power. Through the lyrics of the song, they showed that they were going to have more power in their own appearance and not care about what other people say. Jisoo pulled off a pink bobbed hairstyle with an all pink makeup look paired with a white t-shirt dress and transparent heels. In this scene, Jisoo showed that she is different from the persona in the picture behind and her true self is with short pink hair with choppy bangs. In the music video, each member looked like royalty while looking charismatic with their different outfits and styles. Each of their outfits showed a fierce and unique appearance that was related to their song where they explained that their outer appearances were different than their inside appearances, which they will now show to the world.

Dance Practices

During the dance practice for “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” and “Forever Young,” each member showed off their personal styles with their matching outfits. For “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du,” each member was seen wearing a black and/or white crop top with black pants and white shoes. For “Forever Young,” each member was wearing a white top paired with blue jean shorts and white sneakers. Although they were not on stage, their aura from this dance practice was shown through their outfits. They were wearing casual outfits, but they seemed to make their outfits look so glamorous and bold. Since this was a dance practice after all, they weren’t properly styled like a stage performance. Just like the message of the song, which was that their appearance is for themselves and not for others, their casual dance practice became like a stage performance through their confident presence. Compared to previous dance practices, their outfits for this album showed their own unique styles instead of wearing the same color (i.e. all black). They were able to show their inside appearances through their fashion that they show to the public.

BLACKPINK members are idols, so we tend to get inspired by their style. Their dance practice videos show each member’s unique style, so we are able to see their daily fashion sense. Through their comebacks, we are able to get inspired for new fashion ideas through their chic and charismatic concepts.
