Exclusive Interview: Into the World of Dance with Melvin TimTim

Though perhaps a new name to the K-Pop scene, Melvin TimTim is far from an unknown quantity in the dance world. Having begun to dance in early childhood, TimTim is only twenty-two years old but has already founded his own dance studio, S-Rank Dance, and worked on choreography for major artists. After teaching a class at KCON NY, he took some time to speak with The Kraze on breaking into the K-Pop market.

Q: For our readers who are getting the chance to know you for the first time, can you please give a little introduction about yourself?

A: My name is Melvin TimTim, I’m a professional choreographer. I choreographed for NCT [127’s] newest video “Touch.”

Q: Which K-Pop choreography has been a favorite as a whole this year?

A: NCT was my first, so definitely [them]. [They] have more of a chill vibe that really fits to my style.

Q: What is the creative process when it comes to creating choreography? How long does it take, and if there are any adjustments.

A: For K-Pop, it’s more connected with the audience, so you really want to make it more fun. You want the audience to connect with the choreography so that’s my system when it comes to K-Pop. For my own [taste], I definitely want to make it as hard as I can.

Q: Can you please name a few of the K-Pop artists/groups that you have done work for?

A: NCT and also JYP.

Q: Have you personally had the opportunity to teach the artists that you choreograph for?

A: Yes, they had this TV show and I was actually in the studio with four artists from each different groups [NCT, BTS, etc] and they came up and learned my hard stuff and they are really good. I’m actually not surprised, because I know Koreans are really hard working. When they learned that, it was intense and crazy, and that was awesome.

Q: How does it feel to see your choreography to come to life when seeing performed in a music video and/or on live stages?

A: I just can’t believe this is happening. I’m about to watch the concert, I’m excited to see it and I know they’re going to do [“Touch”] and I’m going to be like “Those are my bros.” It’s an amazing feeling.

Q: Is there a particular K-Pop group or artist out there that you would like to choreograph for?

A: BTS. I got the contacts.

Q: Last question, are there any updates, information, or future plans that you would like to tell readers to look forward to in the coming future?

A: I’m in a TV show called NBC’s World of Dance, check me out! I want to inspire people when it comes to choreography, so look me up!

Be sure to catch Melvin on World of Dance and check out his channel for more awesome choreography!
