Below are some of the best fantasy K-Dramas you should make sure to watch if you consider yourself a fan.
Goblin: The Great and Lonely God
Goblin: The Great and Lonely God is a tvN production starring Gong Yoo, Kim Goeun, Lee Dongwook, and Yoo Inna.
The drama follows the story of Kim Sun (Gong Yoo), a Goryeo warrior who becomes a goblin after a tragic death. He has lived in immortality for close to a century, leaving him lonely and eager to end his life. This is only possible by removing the sword in his chest, but the only person who can do it is his fated bride. He therefore sets out to look for her and eventually meets Ji Euntak (Kim Goeun), a high school student who turns out to be his destined bride.
The story is further complicated by a Grim Reaper (Lee Dongwook) who ferries deceased souls to the afterlife. He is a tenant at Sun’s house and is unaware of his past life with his memories erased, a requirement for his line of work. He finds himself attracted to Sunny (Yoo Inna) and hopes to pursue a romantic relationship with her.
Goblin starts a little slow as the drama tries to set the backstory for the characters and how they are all connected to each other. The slow build-up might discourage many, but the story eventually sets itself right by telling one of the most heart wrenching stories in the history of K-Dramas. The connection between the four characters is superbly interwoven and becomes a whirlwind ride of emotions, making Goblin a must watch show for every K-Drama fan.
Legend of the Blue Sea
Legend of the Blue Sea is a 2017 SBS drama starring Lee Minho and Jun Jihyun.
The story is about Heo Joonjae (Lee Minho), a successful con artist living his best life. After a particularly productive job, he flies to Spain for vacation where he ends up meeting Shim Cheong (Jun Jihyun). Cheong is a mermaid who lives in the deep ocean but is able to turn her fin into legs once she steps on land. The two meet when Cheong breaks into Joonjae’s hotel room and he reports her to the police. He later gets her released after noticing an expensive bracelet that Cheong possesses, since he hopes to steal it from her. After an altercation with some mobsters, Cheong saves Joonjae and erases his memories. Forgetting the plan to steal the bracelet, Joonjae returns to Seoul.
Joonjae suffers a memory gap and is eager to find out what happened to him in Spain when he meets Cheong once again. She follows him to Seoul by swimming across the ocean and finally meets him in the streets. Joonjae takes Cheong to his house in the hopes that this will help him regain the memories he lost.
With the two together, Legend of the Blue Sea embarks into a complicated but fated meeting that goes back to the Joseon era where the two met in a previous life. Their reincarnated selves have to delve into the past to resolve a conflict and ensure that their ill fate does not repeat itself. The drama is a brilliant work of comedy—credited to Jun Jihyun’s interpretation of a mermaid not used to the human world. But the drama also offers a thrilling plot that will keep you beguiled to the end.
