WayV Takes Over The Moon For A “Moonwalk”
The septet initiated their journey with “Take Off” earlier this year and remain concrete with “Moonwalk.”
WayV, the Chinese sub-unit of NCT, marked the year with another comeback. The act released their second mini-album Take Over The Moon featuring “Moonwalk” as the title along with five B-side tracks. With a motto of being revolutionary in bringing change, the group conquers the moon and become trend setters.
The Single
With gentle keyboard notes and breezy humming, the single leads us to a classic electro-pop track. The dance track, with a blend of hefty rap verses and silvery vocals, ranks as one of the archival sounds of SM Entertainment’s 2nd generation artists. By familiarizing the rhythm, the song opens up to a strong chorus with a blow of horns. Standing out from the usual love-themed songs, the single emits a ray of confidence and pride in urging listeners to march towards their dreams. The track also sings “To the newly formed world, take the first step moonwalk,” implying that one needs to be the first to change the world. Inclusive of the single release, listeners will be equally pleased with the line distribution, as vocalists WinWin and Kun experiment with rap verses. Xiaojun holds strong for the vocalists with various climactic high-notes, while rap line Ten, Lucas, Hendery, and Yangyang keep us obliged with their impactful verses.
The Music Video
The music video takes us on an other-worldly adventure. The video begins with a picture of earth and an isolated landscape as water levels rise and meteors fall for more destruction. The group assembles a spaceship and take off in search of a new world―the moon. The imagery of deserted lands, old buildings, and rusty properties hint at an apocalyptic era. The members become the last existing humans on earth, yet the first to reach the moon to showcase “Moonwalk.” As for the choreography, the members join together to perform impulsively while placing themselves in various dimensions. The single also features an interlude with heavy guitar riffs for a dance break, giving the lead dancers their moment. As a finale to the theories, the group cements its place in history as the unit logo freezes an antique clock, prohibiting it from ticking to the end.
