Weekly Charts: March 7 - March 13

Breaking out into the blooming season, this week’s releases create new sounds as refreshing as the crisp spring air. Chart-topping artists reflect the transition of the dreary winter with somber hip-hop tones to more light-hearted beats, and even a grand comeback fit for a spring queen.

SOAKED UP HEART

Epik High tries to heal their wounded hearts with alcohol with “Lovedrunk,” released on March 11 from their sleepless in __________ EP. Their latest alternative hip-hop track sets as a soundtrack to a mini-drama between IU and Jin Seoyeon portraying a tense relationship as a martial arts mentor and her pupil. In spite of the constant pressures to triumph her senior, the sudden loss of her master strikes more painful than any blow to the heart. Topping various music charts like MelOn and Naver at number one, the melancholic release touches the complex emotions attached with distressing relationships and the greater sadness created from loneliness when escaping from a painful departure.  

SPRING AWAKENING

Park Bom makes her long-awaited return to the music scene with “Spring” released on March 13. The legendary singer transforms into the goddess of spring, rising from the bleakness of winter to a blossoming rebirth in a new chapter. Featuring Sandara Park, the two former 2NE1 members find strength in their sorrows in which fallen tears become water to a blooming garden. Rejoicing over the soloist’s comeback, listeners are enraptured by her triumphant lyrics that leave the single at number one on Mnet and Soribada.

A FEW OF MY LEAST FAVORITE THINGS

Woo Wonjae makes his dislikes clear with the single “Taste” featuring Giriboy, released on March 11. Disgruntled by the uncertainty of life, Wonjae vents on matters that make him tick, from the slightest changes in seasons to short-lived happiness. In contrast to the rapper’s apathetic attitude, Giriboy lightens the mood with a list of his favorite things that express his carefree spirit. Taking the number three spot on Genie and Bugs!, Woo Wonjae and Giriboy agree to disagree on their preferences, but assure that one’s own variety of taste is vital in creating unique individuals.
