GOT7’s Jinyoung Takes on His First Lead Role in He Is Psychometric
Fans of GOT7 have been eagerly waiting for this day: Jinyoung has finally taken on his first lead role as Lee Ahn in He Is Psychometric, a romance and fantasy drama currently airing on tvN. The first episode aired on March 11 and the show is currently four episodes in. For those unfamiliar with psychometry, it is the supposed ability to discover facts about an event simply from touching a person or object associated with that event.
The First Episode
The drama begins in a flashback to 2005, introducing the female lead Yoon Jaein’s (Shin Yeeun) father as the fire marshal, warning apartment tenants that the building and packed parking lot isn’t up to par on dealing with fire emergencies. He is berated by a few female members of the building, who rudely write him off and proceed to fire him.
The story then transitions to a young Lee Ahn in his family home, throwing a tantrum on the family room floor about getting a puppy. His father and mother eventually give in and they embark off to a nearby animal shelter just as something sinister is occurring in another portion of the building. The camera cuts to an unknown person knocking on the door of the previous rude females, with the lead hassler opening the door and commenting, “What is it, ahjusshi? Do you have something to say to me?” before she is suddenly stabbed in the abdomen. The murderer’s identity remains a secret as he is shown to have murdered three other tenants in the apartment before placing a lighter in the microwave to start a fire.
While in the elevator, the explosion occurs and Lee Ahn’s family is trapped between floors, unaware of the raging inferno on the seventh floor. His father manages to pry open the doors of the elevator and stop a student and adult man escaping, asking him to save his son. The older man helps to fully pry open the doors and grabs Ahn, while the student discovers that he can no longer run down the stairs due to the fire, leaving them trapped on their current floor.
True tragedy strikes as soon as Ahn is pulled out of the elevator, as the cable wire snaps and the elevator with his parents goes flying towards the ground (talk about a beginning of tragedy! They weren’t playing around). As the firemen arrive on the scene and are unable to get close due to the overcrowded parking lot, the smoke begins to overwhelm the floor on which Ahn and his high school age companion are stuck. Making a split decision at the grim state of things, the student destroys a nearby window and leaps out with Ahn, the two landing hard on the hood of a car below. It is in this moment, near death, that Ahn seems to gain his psychometric powers.
We fast forward to present time, where Ahn is seen at a morgue in order to help out his older friend Eun Jisoo (played by Kim Dasom), an investigator in a special investigation unit that knows of Ahn’s powers and attempts to use them to help her out. Ahn proves that he has yet to be helpful in any way when the only thing he ends up seeing is the underwear sizes of the three victims. Jisoo realizes she’s in big trouble as Ahn’s hyung, Kang Sungmo (Kim Kwon) is on his way. Sungmo, Ahn’s hero that saved him from death in the fire, has grown up to become a special investigator unit prosecutor.
Ahn meets our heroine after surviving the wrath of Sungmo and returning on his way back to school. Jaein catches a pervert in the bathroom watching her change and chases after him, only to accidentally run into Ahn who is wearing the same ensemble and blame him for the incident. Despite the rocky start, Jaein seems to have some sort of protective feelings over Ahn, who seems to be getting the blame for a lot of unfortunate incidents without much evidence. Without spoiling the rest of the episode, the two end up teaming up to solve a mystery.
The drama is definitely intriguing so far. The supernatural element of psychometry is sure to show itself as helpful moving forward as Ahn learns to harness it, and the long-time relationships between the four main characters start coming to light to make for an interesting backstory. There is a bit of a sinister undertone not just in the opening scene involving the unsolved murders, but in the intentions of one of the characters introduced so far as well. There are a lot of questions left to be answered, and the romantic element is building organically. Be sure to keep up with Jinyoung’s new lead role each week on Viki!
