VERIVERY Returns With VERI-ABLE

Rookie group VERIVERY is back with their second mini-album, VERI-ABLE. Complete with five new tracks including title, “From Now,” the sophomore release has the same vibe as their first, making for a perfect step in their idol journey.

“From Now” is the first song on the album and has the same retro vibes as the group’s last title, “Ring Ring Ring.” Laden with heavy electric percussion and literally every other element typically found in 90s pop, the combination of these two tracks makes you wonder if this is the group’s attempt to cement their concept. If it is, it’s definitely working. The music video for “From Now” follows a similar retro formula, with classic 90s references like Nintendo and even big suits found in almost every 1990s era celebrity’s closet.

“Love Line,” the second track on the album, has a similar pop feel to “From Now,” but with a bit of a grittier beat. Gone are the heavy pop synths, instead replaced with a funky driving piano bass line. In “All I Do,” the synthesizers fully return in the form of a classic pop love ballad that allows the group’s vocals to shine. While the song is on the slower side of things compared to the rest of the album, it certainly doesn’t halt the pop vibes established by the first tracks. The next song, “Get Ready,” pumps things back up with its fast pace and gang vocals but is still every bit as 90s as the other tracks on the album, sounding like something you might find on a 1990s Jock Jams album.

Overall, VERIVERY has their bases covered when it comes to creating their image as a retro group, but perhaps more interesting will be the direction the group decides to head next. The final song on the album, “Light Up,” might be a hint to this as it’s drastically different from its sister tracks. Instead of 90s pop elements, this track sounds like something pulled right from today’s tropical house-infused K-Pop scene. Although it’s a 180 degree switch-up from their now-staple retro sound, the song fits VERIVERY...well...very well. Only time will tell how the group balances branching out while maintaining their concept, but if this is the direction things are headed, it looks like VERIVERY is on the way to success.
