Throwback Thursday: Late Night R&B

Perhaps no time of day is more intimate than when the sky is dark and the world is asleep. Sometimes, night can usher in heartbreak, sometimes loneliness, sometimes peace, sometimes love. And while night may have different connotations for everyone, there’s one thing on which we can all agree: music just makes it better. So sit back, relax, and tune in to this week’s Throwback Thursday for some of The Kraze’s best late-night R&B jams.

“Gimme Love” - Car, the Garden

In 2016 Car, the Garden released the sultry “Gimme Love.” With its muted brass line, light swing, and its subtle-not-so-subtle lyrics, “Gimme Love” is a song that will get you feeling some kind of way. Don’t be fooled, though: the song is as complex as it is simple, and its lazy chorus will have you winding down for sleep in no time.

“SOFA” - Crush

Nothing befits a lonely, late night quite like heartbreak, and no song expresses this better than Crush’s 2014 hit “SOFA.” Singing of the literal and metaphorical emptiness left behind by a lost love, Crush weaves together a song as beautiful as it is sad. Though this lovelorn track isn’t likely to put you to sleep, it’s a perfect match for a night spent alone.

“Tonight” - Crucial Star feat. Satbyeol

2011 brought us rapper-songwriter Crucial Star’s A Star Goes Up and with it, “Tonight.” This breakup song features a duet with Satbyeol, whose light crooning complements Crucial Star’s soft-spoken rap in the perfect way. With its subdued, sparkling keyboard, it’s more than suitable for a late-night listen.

“Ment (Jazzed Version)” - Double K feat. BUMZU

In 2017, Double K released a jazz remix of his 2012 song, “Ment.” Originally featuring Dynamic Duo’s Gaeko on the 2012 track, the new version off his Analogue Part 1: Jazzed album instead features R&B singer BUMZU. While the original song is a great listen, the jazzy piano and BUMZU’s vocals perfectly suit this re-release of the track.
