Jump Into Spring Again with Golden Child

On May 2, Golden Child released their new digital single titled “Spring Again (그러다 봄).” The group, having been on hiatus since October’s Genie due to an injury sustained by main vocalist Joochan, has gone relatively quite a while without a comeback. Although it seems a new album may still be far in the future, “Spring Again” offers fans respite in the form of a bright coffeeshop-style ballad, even if the track falls a little flat.

“Spring Again” is the kind of song to frequent coffeeshop speakers: it’s got a ragtime-esque piano line, soft guitars, and even a bright whistle melody. A little campy in nature, it’s exactly what you’d imagine hearing on a happy-go-lucky Spring day stroll, and in that regard, it succeeds as a song. As the members sing of waiting for love on a Spring day, it’s hard not to feel at ease, but considering Golden Child’s characteristic prowess for putting a smile on listeners’ faces, “Spring Again” regrettably misses the mark.

Since their 2017 debut, Golden Child has consistently offered passionate tracks. The group brings an infectious, much-needed vitality to the K-Pop industry, with the members’ personalities permeating their music so thoroughly that even non-fans would find it hard not to appreciate. With previous singles like “DamDaDi” and “LET ME” and even the more emotional “Genie,” Golden Child proved that their strength lies in their...well...oomph. Although it is an enjoyable enough listen, “Spring Again” lacks that spark for which Golden Child is so well known, leaving us to wish for the group’s speedy return to the industry with a full comeback.
