Start a Conversation with HEIZE
HEIZE is back with a new single, “We don’t talk together,” this time with a little help from some friends. Released on July 7, the track features Giriboy and was produced with help from BTS’s SUGA. For fans of both HEIZE and SUGA, it seemed like only a matter of time before the artists would collaborate given their complementary styles; sure enough, when the collab was announced last week, it felt like the K-R&B stars had aligned.
The track features HEIZE’s usual groovy flair—after all, it’s her signature jazzy beats and syncopation that set her apart from her contemporaries—but SUGA’s touch adds an electronic layer to the song usually not found in HEIZE’s music. Perhaps the most notable SUGA addition is the bass in the song: as any ARMY knows, it’s not a SUGA track without bass. The electric guitar in the beginning is a nice organic contrast to the synths, as is the soft piano at the end. Fans of SUGA will be happy to know he also took part in the piano and synth parts on the recording, along with co-producer EL CAPITXN.
In “We don’t talk together” HEIZE and Giriboy lament over a push-and-pull relationship, torn between wanting to break up and staying together. HEIZE, Giriboy, and SUGA all partook in the lyric writing and, honestly, this is where the song shines the most. The verses read like a GPS as both HEIZE and Giriboy try to navigate their way back to love—fitting for a relationship that’s literally lost its way.
Though the topic isn’t exactly lighthearted, the music video for the song is nothing short of amusing. It starts off with HEIZE grave-robbing her past love before wining and dining its skeleton. As the music video progresses, HEIZE not only takes care of her “lover,” but is even seen watering the skeleton in her attempts to help love bloom again. Her efforts are done in vain, however, as the video ends with HEIZE running into the arms of her resurrected lover at sunset, only to open her eyes and find he is but a skeleton once more.
